Confession Is… • Seeing our sin as God sees it. • An open profession of faith. • An acknowledgement of sins • To God. • To a neighbor we have wronged. The 7 Steps to the Cure of Souls
Confession • “Therefore, confess your sins to one another, and pray for one another, so that you may be healed. The effective prayer of a righteous man can accomplish much.” • James 5:16 The 7 Steps to the Cure of Souls
Everyone Sins – Everyone. • “If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and truth is not in us. If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness” • I John 1:8, 9 ESV The 7 Steps to the Cure of Souls
Encouragement • What an encouragement to know that if we are sincerely sorry for something, God will forgive us. He tells us this in 1 John 1:9. “He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” • Once we feel sorry, we need to repent. The 7 Steps to the Cure of Souls
Repentance • Repentance is: • A true sense of one’s own guilt. • An apprehension of God’s mercy in Christ. • An actual hatred of and turning from sin to God. • A persistent endeavor after a holy life and walking with God in the way of His commandments. The 7 Steps to the Cure of Souls
Confess Sin Regularly • If you keep unconfessed sin in your life, it will cause a guilt that will eat away at you like a cancer. It can cause anger and bitterness, and can eventually ruin your life if it is not dealt with and confessed. The 7 Steps to the Cure of Souls
The Result of Confession • The result of confession is freedom through forgiveness. • God can forgive ANY sin. The 7 Steps to the Cure of Souls
God Can • You might think you have a sin in your life that is too much for God to handle. You might think, “Oh! You don’t know what I’ve done. God wouldn’t forgive me for _____” (you fill in the blank). • You are WRONG. • God already knows everything you have done in your entire life, and He is eager to forgive you. God Knows • God sees everything about you and knows everything about you. • “And there is no creature hidden from His sight but all things are open and laid bare to the eyes of Him” (Hebrews 4:13). • God knows, and God loves you anyway, and He is eager to forgive you. Unconfessed Sin • It cannot be stressed enough that unconfessed sin can cause a plethora of problems, such as depression, anxiety, anger, guilt, and feelings of hopelessness. • Many of these problems are commonly seen in the psychologist’s office where unconfessed sin is diagnosed as an illness. You Are Responsible • You are responsible for your own sin. • Confess it. • Repent of it. • Tell God you’re sorry. • The way you respond to sin is more important than the sin itself. The 7 Steps to the Cure of Souls
Your Response to Sin • Unconfessed sin becomes a barrier between us and God. Humbling ourselves before God, confessing the sin, and asking for reinstatement back into a place of close communion can easily dismantle it. The 7 Steps to the Cure of Souls
Examine Your Life • Do you have unconfessed sin in your life? • Do not let it stand between you and God; do not let it sicken your soul. The 7 Steps to the Cure of Souls
