Functional TrainingWhat is it? • The word “functional” refers to all exercises that replicate the movements we perform every day. • Examples include throwing, catching, carrying, pushing, pulling and squatting.
Principles of functional training • The overall goal of functional training is functional independence. • To adapt and develop exercises which allow individuals to perform the activities of daily life more easily and without injuries. • Functional training should develop multiple physical skills throughout its application. • Movements should be multi-planar and should not utilise fixed resistance machines.
Benefits of functional training • Improved joint mobility and stability. • Increased efficiency in motor patterns. • Decreased risk of injury. • Improvements in sporting performance. • Increased core stability and strength. • Improved body composition.
Examples of equipment used • Clubbells - Kettlebells • Macebells - Bands and Ropes • Barbells - Tyres • Dumbbells - Sandbags • Medicine Balls - Suspension Trainers
Functional Training in the Sport & Recreation Industry • With jobs available in fitness centres, sporting grounds or complexes, leisure and aquatic centres and community recreation centres, having a basic understanding of functional training would be beneficial for students. • For those wishing to pursue further studies in fitness, exercise science or allied health, future encounters with functional training are very likely. Having had some first hand experience of this will be beneficial in future studies.
How Does IVET#40 Work? • Students will be taken through a progressive warm up sequence by an instructor prior to the session. • During the main body of the session, students will move between multiple stations for a duration of 30 seconds attempting to work at maximum intensity. Their rest time is while their partner works at maximum intensity for 30 seconds, they will repeat this twice per station
How Does IVET#40 Work? • Each station will feature a different piece of functional training equipment and an exercise related to this. • Upon completion of the main body of the session, students will be taken through a cool down session and will be introduced to self myofascial release through the use of foam rollers. • Overall the session will take 40 minutes.
How can I link this back into my course? We have developed lab activities that can be completed with your class after the IVET#40 session. We do not require this back, this has been designed to assist teachers with the educational benefits of the day. This will be emailed directly to the teacher enabling you to complete this at a later date with your students.
