  2. Viruses • Viruses are a piece of code that piggy backs on another program to run and is self replicating. • Viruses can be made to do any sorts of damage to your computer, such as wipe your hard drive

  3. History • Viruses began appearing in the 1980s in conjunction with the rising popularity of the PC (personal computer) • Because programs and operating systems were so small, it was easy to transmit viruses • People used to download programs from bulletin boards, public places that gave access to many different and desirable programs. It was easy for programmers to imbed a virus into a popular program and let it spread • Viruses were also transmitted via floppy disk. Computers used to boot from the floppy disk, and if it had a virus on it, the virus would begin to run and could easily spread itself to other programs and computers as floppy discs were commonly shared
