  1. Hilbert-Huang Transform Data Processing System (HHT-DPS) V1.2 A scientific and engineering analysis tool for non-linear and non-stationary data applications by Semion Kizhner, Karin Blank, Tom Flatley / 560, Dr. Norden E. Huang / 971, and Darrell Smith / OSC 1

  2. Goals and Objectives • Design and build a turn-key, user-friendly, file driven, PC based system that implements the HHT algorithms developed by Dr. Norden Huang • Phase 1 – “Software Only” version • Phase 2 – “Hardware Accelerated” version 2

  3. EMD Process 3

  4. Intrinsic Mode Functions 4

  5. HHT Application Example 5

  6. Development Strategy • Use Dr. Huang’s published papers and NASA patented algorithms as the starting point • Port, analyze and re-use only the “available and proven HHT source code fragments” and Matlab scripts • Use existing Empirical Mode Decomposition executable “EMD0.exe” as a functional benchmark 6

  7. HHT-DPS Requirements • Simple PC based Microsoft Windows environment • Straightforward operation via graphical user interface • User configurable processing options • Read user data input file, generate user data output files • “Quick Look” data display capability 7

  8. Development Approach • Prototype new Empirical Mode Decomposition (EMD) routines in Matlab and reproduce results from the existing “EMD0.exe” • Enhance processing algorithms in collaboration with Dr. Huang, analyze output and iterate until data is correct • Implement all prototyped algorithms (EMD and Basic Spectrum Analysis Matlab scripts) in ANSII standard ‘C’ (keeping hardware acceleration in mind) 8

  9. Implementation Details • Develop user interface and system control modules • Integrate and test system modules with benchmark data set (length of day) • Document the system (official “Release V1.2” software package, code documentation, user’s guide, change request forms, problem reports, configuration management) 9

  10. HHT-DPS Top Level Diagram EMD Engine.dll Data Analysis Tools.dll Graphical User Interface HHT-DPS Remote Users (future) Local User Ethernet 10

  11. HHT-DPS Application 11

  12. Current Status • Determining system capabilities/limitations by testing HHT-DPS against different data sources, volumes and magnitudes • Presented at HHT Advanced Tech. Briefing • All user access to HHT-DPS V1.2 via the GSFC Technology Transfer Program office • Summer faculty/students perform h/w study • IEEE paper/presentation, spring 2004 12
