  1. Vladimir Frolov for Torino group EEE Project (Extreme Energy Events)

  2. Experimental activities: • The system for testing the MRPC in the Torino INFN laboratory has been fully mounted and checked; • The cosmic ray telescope in the physics laboratory (on first floor of the building) of the Alessandro Volta Lyceum has been mounted and tested; • The noise characteristics and efficiencies of all the 9 MRPC, presently available in Torino, have been determined; • New data readout and storage software has been developed on the basis of the free object-oriented library for analysis and presentation of physical data (ROOT framework). The programs developed are functional both in the LINUX and Windows XP operating systems. The format of data, obtained during our statistics collection, is fully compatible with the format of data, obtained with the aid of software based on the LabView system developed at CERN for the EEE project.

  3. Results of the MRPCs tests in the INFN laboratory: In conditions of good grounding of the detector and electronics we obtained a very low noise level and were able to debug our software and adjust the electronics. On the pictures you can see the efficiency and noise dependences vs. HV.

  4. MRPC noise investigation: The characteristics of different chambers differ very significantly. While the chambers of series 40-42 exhibit a noise level inferior to 15 kHz with the working high voltage and an efficiency higher than 90%, the noise level of chambers from series 63-65 amounts to 250 kHz, which cannot be accepted. Moreover, for chamber #65 we were not even able to reach an efficiency above 90%. Additional studies showed that the noises characterize the chambers themselves, but not the readout electronics or the quality of its screening. It is clearly seen that the dark current in the chambers causes high noise levels.

  5. To find a way of dealing with the high noise levels, we also studied the dependence of the efficiency and noise on the front-end electronics threshold. These studies resulted in quite a paradoxical conclusion: reduction of the threshold lowered the noise level (noise reduction by 20-40%). This effect was achieved, because when the threshold was lowered, the chamber reached the efficiency plateau at a lower high voltage, the dark current also being lower. Regretfully, the above effect requires a very good grounding of the chambers, signal cables and electronics, which is not always possible in conditions of the physics laboratories of schools, where the detectors are to be installed.

  6. The results of MRPCs test on first floor of the “Alessandro Volta” lyceum: In May of 2007 a cosmic ray telescope was installed in the physics laboratory of the Lyceum and tests were performed of the efficiencies and noise characteristics of the chambers. The operation of the software and hardware systems was tested in real conditions. The said test has revealed it necessary to realize high-quality grounding in the laboratory of the Lyceum.

  8. Why we are using our own software? From the very beginning, owing to the absence of part of the electronics, we could not start testing the chambers using the official software, based on LABVIEW and developed at the CERN laboratory especially for the EEE project. For this reason we had to develop a DAQ system based on the ROOT library for analysis and presentation of physical data. As electronics arrived in our laboratory, this program underwent transformation into a full-scale DAQ system, completely compatible, at a hardware and data format level, with the official DAQ software. We decided that since an independent DAQ version could not hinder development of the EEE project and, also, since open source software is more flexible and friendly to experimental physicists, to further develop our own software. Moreover, since the LINUX operating system requires much working experience with computers, our DAQ system has been made to operate on computers with Windows XP, too.

  9. Our DAQ system allows to watch for the telescope in online mode several observers at the same time and shows following telescope’s parameters: Hit distributions Hit multiplicities

  10. T(left)-T(right) Width of pulse

  11. Hits profiles for each chamber in the telescope. These pictures show us that we have small time discrepancy for each FE channel and in the future analysis we have to take into account it.

  12. Hit’s cluster distributions

  13. In our data monitoring program we seek the x and y coordinates of each cluster and calculate the track of the particle through linear fit. • In the calculation we are using following cuts: • Only 1 chamber can have more than 1 hit’s cluster; • |(Xtop-Xbottom)/2-Xmiddle| ≤ 2 • |(ttop-tbottom)/2-tmiddle|≤ 2 ns • If cluster is not satisfied these cuts the program supposes that it is noise cluster and does not take it into account. • By using these cuts we are able to study about 85% of the events in the run.

  14. Noise distributions for each MRPC.

  15. 3D event viewer allows us to see tracks in real-time mode.

  16. The telescope installed on forth floor of the A.Volta school:

  17. Readout system and multi-channel LV power supply (with I2C interface) developed by Torino group.

  18. On forth floor of the A.Volta school we observed very big noise even without HV. After short investigation of the problem we understood that source of the noise is TV booster converter which stands not far away (about 300 m) from the school and it generates very big radio interferences. By oscilloscope we observed that level of the radio signal on the forth floor is 8 times more than on the first floor of the school and almost 20 times more than in the ground floor.

  19. Conclusion: • All 9 MRPCs are tested, 3 chambers have to be repaired; • New DAQ system has been developed and tested in our group; • 6+1 channels LV power supply is developed (we have to test its I2C interface and to make the software for it); • 1 cosmic rays telescope is installed and tested in A.Volta school, but we must move it from the forth to the ground floor due to big level of the radio interference.
