Simplifying GIS CollaborationUsing ArcGIS and the Web Using ArcGIS Server and ArcGIS Viewer for Flex in the QC Process for the Indiana Local Resolution NHD Project Mike Martin, Indiana Dept. of Natural Resources
Quality Control for Local Resolution NHD • IGIC’s Waters Workgroup has the task of QC for the new local resolution NHD linework • The vendor, AECOM, submits linework and other reference data by full or partial subbasin every 3 or 4 weeks • Workgroup has 10 business days to provide feedback to AECOM
Quality Control Workflow • Vendor, AECOM, provides linework • Members of workgroup review and identify items of concern • Vendor addresses concerns • Workgroup reviews AECOM resolution and approves or rejects
QC Without ArcGIS Server • Vendor, AECOM, provides linework and reference data • file geodatabase of checked-out 24K NHD • reference data: 6-acre streams, 6-acre basins, hillshades • file geodatabase of new linework • shapefile of source data information Latest Subbasin: 1.86 GB compressed
QC Without ArcGIS Server • Vendor, AECOM, provides linework and reference data • Members of workgroup review and identify items of concern • individuals from different organizations • no common network • requires ArcGIS Desktop • different configurations of Windows, ArcGIS • review is not part of normal job duties—time is of the essence — ISSUES
QC Without ArcGIS Server • Vendor, AECOM, provides linework and reference data • Members of workgroup review and identify items of concern • local copy of all data for each member or each network • individual shapefile of callouts for each member • each reviewer creates ArcMap document with linework, reference data, and callouts • each reviewer edits individual callouts shapefile • all shapefiles of callouts merged, sent to AECOM — WORKFLOW
QC Without ArcGIS Server • Vendor, AECOM, provides linework and reference data • Members of workgroup review and identify items of concern • Vendor addresses concerns • edits the callouts shapefile • sends shapefile back to workgroup
QC Without ArcGIS Server • Vendor, AECOM, provides linework and reference data • Members of WWG review and identify items of concern • Vendor addresses concerns • Workgroup reviews AECOM resolution and approves or rejects • shapefile distributed to each reviewer • each reviewer adds revised shapefile to map and review
QC With ArcGIS Server • Vendor, AECOM, provides linework and reference data • file geodatabase of checked-out 24K • reference data: 6-acre streams, 6-acre basins, hillshades • file geodatabase of new linework • shapefile of source data information
QC With ArcGIS Server • Members of workgroup review and identify items of concern • local copy of all data for each member or each network • One person downloads data and exports to geodatabases on server
QC With ArcGIS Server • Members of workgroup review and identify items of concern • One person downloads data and exports to geodatabases on server • individual shapefile of callouts for each member • callouts feature class added to SDE database
QC With ArcGIS Server • Members of workgroup review and identify items of concern • One person downloads data and exports to geodatabases on server • callouts feature class added to SDE database • each reviewer creates ArcMap document with linework, reference data, and callouts • web services published for linework, reference data, and callouts
QC With ArcGIS Server • Members of workgroup review and identify items of concern • One person downloads data and exports to geodatabases on server • callouts feature class added to SDE database • web services published for linework, reference data, and callouts • each reviewer edits individual callouts shapefile • reviewers add callouts via web application
QC With ArcGIS Server • Members of workgroup review and identify items of concern • One person downloads data and exports to geodatabases on server • callouts feature class added to SDE database • web services published for linework, reference data, and callouts • reviewers add callouts via web application • all shapefiles of callouts merged, sent to AECOM • new callouts exported from database, sent to AECOM
QC With ArcGIS Server • Vendor addresses concerns • Workgroup reviews AECOM resolution and approves or rejects • shapefile distributed to each reviewer • changed callout records replaced in database
QC With ArcGIS Server • Vendor addresses concerns • Workgroup reviews AECOM resolution and approves or rejects • changed callout records replaced in database • each reviewer adds revised callouts shapefile to map and review • revised callouts reviewed in web application
Advantages Using ArcGIS Server • No software needed by reviewers • Single copy of all datasets • No prep-work for reviewers • Reviews can be made from any Windows computer with access to Internet • Quicker turnaround
QC Review Using Web Application Map layers of old and new features, reference data
QC Review Using Web Application Back-ground layers matching sources used by vendor
QC Review Using Web Application Reviewer adds callout at location of found issue
QC Review Using Web Application Callout added to enterprise geodatabase
QC Review Using Web Application Post QC reviewers check updated linework and AECOM’s responses
Requirements Using ArcGIS Server Server environment • web server • enterprise geodatabase • ArcGIS Server, Standard • Published web map services • Published image services • Published web feature service Application development environment • ArcGIS Viewer for Flex
Web Services Checked-Out 24K Data, web map service • NHD Flowline, NHD Waterbody, NHD Area Local Resolution Submittal, web map service • NHD Flowline, NHD Waterbody, NHD Area • WBD HUC 8 and HUC 10 • 6-acre streams, 6-acre basins • metadata for imagery and hillshade source Imagery matching source used by vendor, image service Hillshade matching source used by vendor, image services Callouts, web feature service Post-QC Data, web map service
