2008 and 2009 Georgia Student Health Survey II Excerpts Prepared for the Cobb Alcohol Taskforce by Jeff Inman, Coordinator Cobb Safe and Drug Free Schools The following charts illustrate the demographics of student survey respondents from Marietta City School District. Graphs that follow illustrate acomparison of excerpted alcohol related survey questions and student response rates from Marietta City School District and all schools in Georgia. The Georgia Student Health Survey is administered through the internet to students in grades 6, 8, 10, and 12 every year during the month of October. This section of the 2008 survey will serve as baseline data and comparison for 2009 for the Cobb Alcohol Taskforce and future survey results will become part of our evaluation data.
Marietta 6th, 8th and 12th grades show a decrease in student’s past 30-day use of alcohol from 2008 to 2009. Marietta 10th grade show a 2% increase.
Marietta 6th and 12th grades show a decrease and 8th and 10th grades show an increase in students’ reporting alcohol is harmful, from 2008 to 2009.
Generally the perception of peer disapproval of alcohol use decreases with age. Marietta 6th and 12th grades show slight increases and 8th and 10th grades show marked increases from 2008 to 2009.
Generally students’ belief that alcohol is easy to get increases with age. Marietta students’ show decreases in alcohol is easy to get (across all grades), from 2008 to 2009.
Adults disapproval of student alcohol use remains fairly consistent.
Marietta 8th, 10th and 12th grades show 5%, 3% and 4% decreases in binge drinking, from 2008 to 2009.
8% 8% Georgia 10th and 12th grades show dramatic increases (16% and 20%) in weekend alcohol use, from 2008 to 2009. Marietta 10th and 12th grades show an 8% decrease in weekend alcohol use.
Marietta 10th and 12th grades show less alcohol use at a friends house than Georgia 10th and 12th grades, in 2008 and 2009. Marietta 10th grade shows 11% decrease in alcohol use at a friends house from 2008 to 2009.
21% Marietta students show decreases (across all grades) in friends use of alcohol at home from 2008 to 2009. Marietta 10th grade show a 5% decrease and 12th grade show a 21% decrease from 2008 to 2009.
7% Marietta and Georgia 10th grade show no change in drove while drinking, but Marietta 12th grade show a 7% decrease in drove while drinking for 2008 to 2009.
Generally students’ use of alcohol in a car is far less than at a friend’s house or at their own home. Marietta 10th and 12th grades show a 2% and 3% decrease in alcohol use in a car from 2008 to 2009.
