RIT Team P13656: Agitator Redesign for Corrosive Environment - CTI Meeting March 11th, 2013 MSD II
Meeting Outline • Current Project State • MSD I Recap and Project Changes • Feasibility Test Results • Future Vision for MSD II • Testing Overview • Project Budget • Proposal • Additional Project Needs • Timeline • Deliverables
Current Project State Recap of MSD I Project Changes Pre-Winter Hiatus Waiting for test results from visit to Jamestown at end of last meeting • Project scope changed from part cleaning via mechanical agitation system to the use of ultrasonics • Budget increased in anticipation of more costly purchases
Feasibility Test Setup Equipment Highlights Tank Conditions Solution Used: SevereClean _____ Composition not known Amount of Solution: 4 gallons Initial Bath Temperature: 137-140F Heating elements do not remain on the entire time. After the transducers are turned on, the energy from the 600 watt sonics transfers heat energy to the bath. Model: SC-6 Tank Capacity: 6 gallons Tank Material: 316L SS Tank Dimensions: 13” x 13” x 12” Power: Standard 120V, 20A Ultrasonic Power: 600 W Transducer Type: 40 kHz piezoelectric Heating Power: 1000 W Loudness (insulated): 80 dB Frequency Generator Output: 40.8 kHz Cost: $3,462.00 (Peter quote) Warranty: 5 yrs on transducers, 1 yr on SS tank
Feasibility Test Procedure (just discuss) • Degassing time: 7 min • Part placed in tank with thick rubber glove in a ‘clean side up’ orientation (because transducers mounted on bottom of tank) • 1st removal from tank (and inspected visually); time: 16 min • 2nd removal from tank; time: 17 min • Turning tinted orange/red on the sides • 3rd removal from tank; time: 22 min • Comparing to one of the original bar stock it looks shades lighter, but obviously not completely removed as compared to the bare SS bottom face of the bar stock. • Temperature of bath is 150F • 4th removal from tank; time: 18 min • Tested specimen is much lighter in color, appears somewhat polished • The coating is not completely removed, but we can tell significant stripping has occurred. We will now follow up with a coating thickness check, to evaluate the degree of stripping. • Total stripping time: 73 min (1 hr 13 min); degassing time was not included
Feasibility Test Results Total Time in Ultrasonic Bath: 73 min Initial Coating Thickness: _____ microns Final Coating Thickness: avg. ____microns (Dayton Coating Technology) Plot of wear over time (2 data points)….projected with a linear fit to completion Comment on possible non-linear fit
Future Vision for MSD II • Testing Overview • Project Budget • Proposal • Additional Project Needs • Timeline • Deliverables
Testing Overview • First Round • Variable Testing • Corrosion Testing • Capillary Test • Solution Testing • Second Round • Scale-up Test
First Round Testing (Variable, Corrosion, and Capillary Tests) • Details….sample size, data collection methodology (triangle), error mitigation, variables, etc. • Will be conducted in RIT lab using small Branson ultrasonic cleaning unit
Second Round of Testing(Solution and Validation Tests) • Conducted using larger scale production unit • Test outline and objectives….what we’re planning on analyzing and initial thoughts on tank optimization
