  2. Raffles Institution student collapsed from heatstroke • Parents are getting worried • Ministry of Education (MOE) has given guidelines to follow WHAT HAPPENED?

  3. MOE GUIDELINES • Students should stay hydrated • Avoid outdoor activities during 11am to 3pm • Students should feel fine before doing physical activities

  4. Hwa Chong Institution: PE teachers are trained in first aid • Anglo-Chinese School (Independent): new students go through a medical screening • Ang Mo Kio Secondary: Water coolers are placed near the school’s sports areas. OTHER MEASURES THAT SCHOOLS ARE TAKING

  5. According to Meteorological Service Singapore, temperatures get warmer from late March to May. • On the day the student collapsed, temperature was 28.2 degree Celsius • Normal temperature was 27.2 degree Celsius at 9am. INCREASE IN TEMPERATURE

  6. PARENTS’ CONCERN • “Why push them? It’s not right-they are just kids, not recruits.” –Mr Cheng • Mr Cheng was so worried that he wrote in to the Straits Times Forum last week • Calling for schools to assure parents that they have safety procedures in place

WHAT IS HEATSTROKE? • Hot weather, drinking too little water can lead to heatstroke • Potentially fatal Can cause: • Seizures • Brain damage • Problems with the liver, kidneys and circulation • Affect the blood’s ability to clot DICTIONARY: potential:  the possibility of something happening or of someone doing something in the future:

  9. HOW TO PREVENT HEATSTROKE Do: Drink plenty of water or consume isotonic drinks Take short breaks during workouts Wear loose and light-coloured clothing Don’t: Exercise when you are feeling unwell
