Triple play service architecture (Focus Group FS VDSL) Stéphane Py – France Télécom R&D SG16/QB Associate rapporteur
Agenda • FS VDSL overview • Service definition provided by the operator group • System Architecture and Customer Premises Equipment overview
FS-VDSL Overview • Launched in Paris, July 2000 • Target : end-to-end video-centric platform specification to be published in May 2002 • Scope includes architecture, video elements, protocols, customer equipment functionality, VDSL transceivers, operations • Successful verification of specifications via international system demonstrators hosted by operators • Leverage end-to-end interoperability • FS-VDSL Committee has joined ITU in 2002 as a focus group attached to SG16 • Despite the name, FS VDSL addresses all DSL technologies capable of supporting video delivery (ADSL, ADSL2+, VDSL)
FS-VDSL overviewOperators involved Telenor Telia BT Eircom KPN Deutsche Telekom Bell Canada Belgacom Swisscom France Telecom Telecom Italia Qwest SBC Telefonica Bezeq Korea Telecom
FS-VDSL overviewWorking groups • Operator Requirements • Services requirements and infrastructure deployment issues • Addresses security of digital content • Published by FS VDSL in 2002 and adopted by SG16 as a supplement in June 2003 • System Architecture and Customer Premises Equipment • End-to-end platform architecture and protocols • Customer equipment configurations and connectivity functions • Published by FS VDSL in 2002, adopted by SG16 in June 2003, currently in AAP (H610) • OAM & P • Operational aspects taking into account existing OSS platforms • Published by FS VDSL in 2002, adopted by SG16 in June 2003, currently in AAP (H611) • Physical Layer Specification • Promoting VDSL transceiver interoperability • Published by FS VDSL in 2002, transferred to DSL Forum
Service definition • Service definition has been provided by the operator group • Three service category : • TV based services • PC based services • Voice services • Various combinations of theses elementary services can be offered • Content security (Access control, content encryption, conditional access and digital right management) identified as key to deliver these services
Service definitionTV based services • Broadcast TV and audio, up to three channels • HDTV • Pay per view • Video on demand • Search engine • Video control : pause, fast forward • Electronic Program Guide • Picture in Picture, Picture in Browser • PVR • Interactive TV : browsing, mail, chat … • Video quality equivalent to cable or satellite and additional services
Service definitionPC based and Voice services • High speed Internet access including email … • Live TV using « PC » technologies • Video on demand • Video conferencing • Interactive games • Need to support connection sharing • Bit rate for the Internet access up to 3Mbits/s for residential • Bit rates for video in the range 300-750 kbits/s • Voice service description is light, based on derived voice
System Architecture and CPE • A specific terminology has been introduced to avoid confusion between modem, gateways, residential gateways …. • The SA and CPE group has defined • End-to-end protocols to support basic connectivity and basic function • The use of an hybrid modem performing both L2 and L3 functions • CPE and network behaviors to support access to several IP networks • Main choices • Use of ATM as layer 2 over DSL • Core network flexibility • Distributed and centralized environment for the CPE • Consideration of an « Ethernet-like » home network • No selection of an home network technology • Transport of the video is coding-independent
System Architecture and CPE IP networks • If the services are provided by different service operators, each one will need IP connectivity with the device accesing the service on the user side
Conclusion • There is not only one definition of triple play • The exact set of service will differ from one country to another • H610 defines a set of functions and tools to help the setup of triple play services • H610 is • Video centric • Considering DSL technologies, mobile network are out of the scope • Service interactions are not considered in detail • SG16/QB plans to investigate in this direction
