Sustainability • The ability to maintain the human, social, and material resources to achieve your academy’s long-term goals • Each academy must sustain its “internal vitality” • Sustain the efforts of leadership team members and industry partners in achieving the academy’s vision and mission through identified and measurable goals • Identify core roles and responsibilities and review these often

Elements of Sustainability • Leaders take responsibility for their academy’s success • Involvement of industry partners, community leaders • Diversified funding from the start • Solid infrastructure • A clear focus on the academy’s goals • Ability to address problems and concerns as they arise and demonstrate results • Comprehensive and strategic academy planning • Ability to adapt to changing industry needs

  4. Sustainability Checklist • Take this time to complete the Sustainability Checklist as a leadership team • This may reveal the areas your team needs to work on the most during this afternoon session • Team Roles & Responsibilities • Mission Statement • Defining Measurable Goals

More on Mission vs. Vision • A visionary is someone who sees what is possible, who sees the potential • A missionary is someone who carries out that work • Your academy’s vision is about what is possible, about all that potential • The mission is what it takes to make that vision come true • Ultimately, your mission statement is the wind that brings you to your desired harbor

Mission Accomplished • The mission is the doing part • It is what you will DO to bring your vision to a reality • While it is powerful to talk about the work you do, it is more powerful to talk about it in the context of WHY you are doing that work – your vision for making your academy a successful experience for all students • As you craft your mission statement, consider starting with your vision statement as the lead-in to your mission statement

Setting Goals • Goals represent a concrete means of working toward fulfilling your vision and mission • Goals help you with the question of HOW • Goals may be embedded in your mission statement or exist separately as objectives • Review example SLC goals and suggested goal criteria • The SMART goal worksheet

Channeling Dr. Newell’s Sports Obsession What is it about successful sports teams that makes them function so well as teams? • The coaches or captains are successful at establishing the same vision in the mind of each team member; that at the end of the season they will be #1 in their league, city, state, or nation. • All members share a common team mission or goal; to win each and every game they play. • There’s an opponent, or a goal to be bested, and everyone knows clearly who or what it is. • Each player has a personal mission and goals that mesh with or complement those of the team; to perform their part of each play during the game to the best of their ability. • Each team member knows their position and how their individual efforts contribute to the team’s success. They also know their teammates depend on them.
