Controlled assessment • Both OCR and AQA offer GCSE Controlled Assessments based on historic sites • EH is planning to increase the amount of support we can offer to schools who already use our sites in this way or who wish to develop a new CA • Aim is to show you what is available at present – including a brand new, hot off the press CA based on Portchester Castle • Also to get your views on using EH sites for CA and what you feel would help you most

Accessing Our SitesFree Educational Visits • Every year over 400,000 students visit English Heritage sites. • If you book an FEV the group get in for FREE and you are entitled to a free orientation visit to help you plan your day. • You also have access to: • Online resources • Printed materials • Publications e.g. 20% discount on guidebooks • Guides • Hazard Information Sheets • Teacher’s Kits • Free familiarisation visit • Facilitated Visits • Onsite resources such as costumes and handling collections All of which help you to get the most of your day.
Accessing Our SitesDiscovery Visits • Hands-on site-based activities which combine inspiring out of the classroom experiences with quality learning • They have been specially developed to meet the needs of different groups across the Key Stages • They are led by specialist educators, site staff and volunteers • They cover the breadth of English history, but also a range of other subjects across the curriculum • They enable students of all ages and abilities to meet characters from the past, role-play, make or handle intriguing objects, dress up • Charge of £100 per school group (adult helpers free)

Creative approaches to site visits It doesn’t have to involve worksheets!
Creative approaches to site visits • Develop your own Geocache Trail for a property giving the students the brief of designing an interpretative tool for other visitors • Use digital cameras to film a trailer advertising a property • Use wipe boards to create word banks and interesting facts which children gather from interpretation panels • Group work – planning an attack and defending a castle • Find and seek images trails • Designing audio or virtual tours • Designing a property leaflet • Creative and imaginative writing
