Akwesasne Mohawk Territory • Akwesasne (Land Where the Partridge Drum) • 80 miles northeast of Lake Ontario; 60 miles southwest of Montreal, Quebec • Mohawk Kanienkehaka Nation is part of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) Confederacy • Known for basketry weaved with Black Ash splints and Sweetgrass
Minneapolis Institute of Art Mary Kawennatakie Adams Akwesasne Mohawk, Wolf clan, 1917-1999 Basket, 1985 Sweetgrass Mary Adams learned to make baskets from her mother and grandmother. Adams made baskets all her life, and in 1980 she was chosen to produce a basket for Pope John Pall II in honor of the beatification of Kateri Tekakwitha (Mohawk). This particular basket design came to her in a dream. It has 150 miniature baskets woven onto the form of a large basket.

National Indigenous Elder Justice Initiative Innovation: Elder Maltreatment Survey Purpose - Awareness, elder abuse policy development, and infrastructure building for reporting, investigation, and intervention for indigenous elders. Participation - Confidential & voluntary. Surveys topics include: demographics, cultural identification, experiences and/or observations of elder maltreatment and elder abuse, & general past life experiences. Duration of survey -Participation may take approximately 30-60 minutes Participants - (AI, AN, NH) 50 years +

Elder Abuse Multidisciplinary Team • A team of professionals representing their agencies bound by the common purpose of addressing the safety and wellbeing of elders within our unique community. • Saint Regis Mohawk Tribe – Tribal Police, Adult Protective Services, Office for the Aging, Chronic Care Nursing Department Outreach Chronic Care Nursing Department, Victim Services • Mohawk Council of Akwesasne – Akwesasne Mohawk Police Service, Akwesasne Mohawk Ambulance, Tsiionkwanonhsothe, Home Care Home Support, Victim Services • Hogansburg Volunteer Firefighter • Monthly meetings • Brief review of previous month, topics for the month, case review, other action items, and date of next meeting. Minutes are audio recorded, documented, and emailed to all MDT members. • Case reviews are old closed cases that are discussed by all agencies to see what could have been done differently. This is vital for agencies to learn more about each other and how to collaborate easier.
