  2. Founding Mission • Founded by Father Serra established July 16, 1769

  3. Location • San Diego , Costal Region, Where kumeyaay lived

  4. Design/Layout Workshop , Church, Courtyard, Cemetary , Fountain, Garden ,Adobe Building , Bell Tower , patio and padre’s quarters.

  5. Mission Life Native American Life Missionary Life The Missionary’s would rise livestock , bulid building cleared the land and raised cattle . They also taught the Native Americans cristanity, to cook, agricouture trades, to make crafts and to ranch. Worked along the Native Americans in fields and workshops. Responsible for religion servies: weddings , funerals and baptisms. • Bells ring in bell tower campanario , to wake up at sunrise , to go to mass for morning prayers. Altole was served for breakfast. Follow day’s assigment: work in the fields , orchard’s and workshops. Then at lunch they would eat pozole followed to a siest( a short nap).

  6. Mission life Today San Diego de Alcala stands today as a memorial to the Spanish and Kumeyaay Indians. It also is a full service church and a museum is what the mission is used for today and was restord as a hestorical center. And is also kown as a Basilica. If the pope came he could be blessed.

  7. Take a Stand • The mission system was horrible because the missionary’s would treat the Native Americans disrespectfully. • You couldn’t live with your family you were seprorated from your family, and had to grow by yourself. • If you wanted to see family out side of the mission you would get punished. • You couldn’t speak your language or dress your way.

More Reseach Indian children would die before age 4 because the Europeans brought many diseases.Young boys would be taught to sing and would sing the church choir and girls would help their mother cook and clean.The mission bells would ring because the would wake everyone up for morning prayer at sunrise. There’s a staute of Father Serra at mission San Barbara.
