  2. Double life Amphibians spend their lives in the water and on land. The word amphibian means two lives. Amphibians live in moist places near water to prevent dehydration.

  3. ecothermic Amphibians cannot regulate their own body temperature. They are the same temperature as the air or water around them.

  4. Scale-lessPermeable Skin Most amphibians have soft, moist skin that is protected by a slippery secretion of mucus. Water and oxygen can pass through their skin.

  5. gills All amphibians begins their lives with gills. Most lose their gills and breathe through lungs as adults.

  6. frogs Smooth, moist skin that makes them look “slimy”; narrow with longer hind legs and webbed hind feet; Higher, rounder, bulgier eyes

  7. toads Rough, dry, bumpy skin that can look like warts; Body is wider than frog with shorter, less powerful hind legs; Lower football-shaped eyes

  8. Salamanders and newts Lizard-like appearance but without scales; Long, slender bodies, four short legs; all stages of life have tails

  9. caecilians No legs and not tail, Looks like a snake or earthworm but has the properties of amphibians; Between 5-14 inches long (can be up to 4 feet long!)
