  2. Background • Surveys • To identify acaricidal plants, which parts are used & how they are prepared & applied • To determine status of synthetic acaricide use in selected project sites

  3. Broader Objective • Farmer participatory rural appraisal (PRA) of commonly used pesticidal plant control strategies under farm conditions using standardised comparative methodologies Specific objective • To determine the acaricidal effect of selected botanicals under typical small-scale farming conditions WP5 heavily dependent on WP2 (foundation at community level)

  4. Procedure • The pesticide will be applied topically • The animals should be divided into treated group (at least 100 animals), untreated control group (5) and control group treated with a known acaricide (5). • Keep groups separately to avoid the rub-on effect that is common when animals are treated topically. • Ticks are counted (as from day 0) on 35 randomly selected animals in the treated group and all the controls before the compound is applied • The frequency of application will be based on that of commercial acaricides ie weekly, during the peak rainy season (Dec to March) when the ticks are most active. • Tick counts will be done before each application

  5. Assessment parameters • Tick counts and species identification • Number of standard (females) ticks • Observations for changes on the animal skin and other conditions • Assess cattle for tick-borne disease
