Use of Calculators in Primary Mathematics CALCULATORS IN PSLE To align the assessment with the curriculum, calculators will be allowed in one part of the Primary School Leaving Examination (PSLE) Mathematics and Foundation Mathematics examinations from 2009.
Use of Calculators in Primary Mathematics CALCULATORS IN PSLE • As calculators will be allowed in one part of the examination, there is a need to restructure the examination format into two papers: - Paper 1 is the non-calculator component to ensure that important computational skills continue to receive emphasis. - Paper 2 is the component which allows the use of calculators. • The two papers will be taken on the same day with an administrative break between the papers.
Use of Calculators in Primary Mathematics CALCULATORS IN PSLE • Only calculators that are approved by the Singapore Examinations & Assessment Board (SEAB) will be allowed in the examination. • To maintain continuity from primary to secondary education, these calculators can also be used at the secondary level.

Format of P5/P6 Examination Mathematics / Foundation Mathematics Paper 2-MARK SHORT-ANSWER QUESTIONS - For each question, a candidate has to write his answer in the space provided. Marks are awarded as follows: • 2 marks are awarded if the correct answer is given. • If an incorrect answer is given, 1 mark is awarded for the correct method or working shown. • Any unit required in an answer is provided and a candidate has to give his answer in that unit.
Format of P5/P6 Examination Mathematics / Foundation Mathematics Paper • STRUCTURED/LONG-ANSWER QUESTIONS - For each question, a candidate has to show his method of solution (working steps) clearly and write his answer(s) in the space(s) provided.
