Lync, the New Generation of Office Communication: Are You Ready to Give Up with Your Office Phone? Hadi Rangin Information Technology Accessibility & Collaboration Coordinator University of Illinois at Urbana/Champaign
Preview • Overview on Lync functions and capability • Overview on Accessibility/usability issues • Demo of selected features and issues
What is Lync? • Powerful communication tool • Much more than telephony system • Instant messaging, video, and other collaborative services are not covered
List of major functions in Lync • Standard telephony • Instant messaging • Meetings and conference calls • Sharing and collaboration • Voice and video • Call forward and simultaneous ring • Response groups
Lack of full Menu Support • Relying on 90-100 shortcut keys • We do not consider shortcut keys as accessibility solution • Shortcuts are helpful but they should not be the only mean to access an interface
Problems with lack of menu support a. Tabbing on the interface to reach desired functions b. Shortcut keys not available for all functions and not customizable
Which tab am I in? • Screen readers can't identify which tab is selected • No easy mechanism to switch between tabs
Read-back Capability Missing • Texts in text box fields are not read by screen readers • Can't manipulate text • Examples: Search, personal note, etc
Mystery Status • Status information not accessible • Can't say you are Available, Busy, Do Not Disturb, etc.
Non-standard and Inconsistent Behavior • Planning next move based on element type • Inconsistent use of link, button, menu, etc • Inconsistent behavior including with radio options • Examples: Picture and call forwarding options
Confusing Navigation Scheme • Enter key doesn't trigger buttons • Space bar is used instead
No Review Mode • Screen reading programs have no access to non-focusable elements • Problem is the underlying technology Silverlight
Other issues • Basic telephony operation (start a call, hang-up, forward, etc) • Missing Label Text • Incorrect use of element types • Time elapsed Information not accessible • Unexpected Result for Renaming a Group
