  2. Let’s list some nouns that remind us of what we’ve learned about immigration. • I will start us out: -Boat_____ -Statue of Liberty_______ -Examiners_______ -Families________ Let’s compile some vivid verbs for some OUTSTANDING two word sentences!

  3. “HERE TO STAY?” • Take a look at this for the next 30 seconds and we will discuss things you notice about it…

  4. “HERE TO STAY?” • Text features: Title Subheadings Photos Captions Vocabulary Timeline Comic insert What do they add to the text??

  5. Everyone get out a sheet of paper • Let’s look at the subheadings again: (label your paper “Here to Stay?” as your title) NOW WRITE THE FOLLOWING: Introduction: simply label it Introduction Subheading 1: A Bigger Issue Subheading 2: Coming to America Subheading 3: Daring to Dream

  6. “HERE TO STAY?” • 1st Reading: You will take turns reading aloud in your groups *My task manager will begin reading FIRST. As the person in your group is reading, you will be responsible for writing two things that stood out to you in that section.

  7. “HERE TO STAY?” • 2nd Reading: This time, I will read each section to you. You may either write down something else that stood out to you or place a **star** next to it if you think it contributes to the central idea of the text.

  8. “HERE TO STAY?” • 2nd Reading: INTRODUCTION… Now discuss with your group what you wrote.

  10. “HERE TO STAY?” • Coming to America… I will choose someone to read this section aloud. Now discuss with your group what you wrote.

  11. “HERE TO STAY?” • Daring to Dream… I will choose someone else to read aloud. Now discuss with your group what you wrote.

  12. “HERE TO STAY?” • As a group, you will discuss they key points you wrote down during the first and second reading. • Then you will agree on a #1 key point and the writer will jot it on a sticky note and run it up to the butcher paper under the appropriate subheading.

  13. “HERE TO STAY?” • Let’s do a few things before deciding what we think the CENTRAL IDEA is…. 1) Let’s revisit the title 2) Let’s take a look at the subheadings 3) Let’s examine the key points you write for each subheading.

  14. SSR Time • While you are reading (preferably through Ch 3 of Lyddie, MyOn, or your own book), I am going to conference with some of you about your narratives.
