Sport Philosophy By Level: Modified Grade 7/8 (Modified): The 7th and 8th grade interscholastic program is the first formal competitive opportunity for students. Participation is the priority as these student/athletes will begin to practice with a purpose and develop skills of teamwork, sportsmanship and discipline. These safe and supervised activities require an athletic code of responsibilities and its ensuing appropriate behavior to facilitate role models in our schools. Playing time will be directly linked to practice time; however, a specified amount of playing time is never guaranteed.
JV The Junior Varsity level of competition is the program in which there is an increased emphasis placed upon team play, physical conditioning and refinement of basic skills. Winning at the Junior Varsity level is considered important, and participants should be taught how to cope with game situations and how to win and lose graciously. Each individual will be given the opportunity to play during the season at the discretion of the coach.
Varsity The Varsity level of athletic competition is the culmination of the high school athletic program. Team play, sportsmanship, individual physical ability, motivation and mental attitude are very important aspects of competition at the Varsity level. The team definitely plays to win the contest, but Varsity contestants should accept the fact that important lessons are to be learned from losing. There continues to be very strong emphasis on academics, sportsmanship, and a chemical-free life-style. It is recognized that not all participants may play in every contest. Playing time is at the discretion of the coach.
Away Game Transportation • Student-athletes will be required to ride to and from away contests via Le Roy Central School transportation, unless prior arrangements have been made with their with coach • Coaches can set their own team rules regarding transportation home from away contests • With permission of their coach, a student-athlete will be allowed to ride home with his/her parent/guardian only (signature required)
Communication Communication between: 1. Player and coach 2. Parents, player and coach 3. Parents, player and Athletic Director 4. Parents, player and Principal 5. Parents, player and District Superintendent
Communication (cont.) • Please do not attempt to meet with a coach before or after a contest or practice. These can be emotional times for both the parent and the coach. Meetings of this nature do not promote resolution. • Please wait 24 hours before contacting a coach after a game or practice. All arranged meetings will take place on school grounds, during school hours with a third party present.
Topics to Avoid Playing time. 2. Team strategy and/or play calling. 3. Other student-athletes. There are situations that may require a conference between the coach and the parent. These are to be encouraged. It is important that both parties involved have a clear understanding of the other’s position.
Attendance- Mrs. Lynda Lowe If a student misses any part of a school day due to sickness they are not allowed to participate that day. Unexcused Tardy-Students need to be here by end of first period (8:35am) in order to participate. 4 or more unexcused tardies, students can not participate that day. All other absences need to have a doctor’s verification note.
Academic Policy • Grades are reviewed every five weeks, any students participating in extracurricular activities that are failing a class will be put on academic probation. Students need to stay after school every day and get a pass to give their coaches to participate. • Students can challenge it on the given challenge date.

What is a Concussion? • A concussion is a traumatic brain injury (TBI) that affects brain function. • Effects are usually temporary • Usually caused by a blow to the head, but violently shaking the head can also cause concussions (whip lash) • Do not have to lose consciousness (most do not) • No longer grade concussions – a head injury is a head injury is a head injury (no such thing as “got bell rung”)
Signs & Symptoms • Headache • Amnesia • Dizziness • Nausea/Vomiting • Fogginess/sluggish • Fatigued • Confusion/Appearing “dazed” • Vision problems
Signs & Symptoms (cont.) • Sensitivity to light • Sensitivity to sounds • Balance difficulty • Changes in personality • Trouble concentrating • Slowed reaction times • Unable to recognize familiar things • Changes in sleeping and/or eating patterns
What Happens Next? • If your child/athlete is suspected to have a concussion, they will be immediately removed from the game/practice & not allowed to return • A follow up with a physician will be required to begin the return to play steps • Once the nurse has received the physician’s note to begin the 6 steps, and the athlete has been symptom free for 24 hours*, the athlete may need to do a post-injury ImPACT test & may begin the 6 steps w/Amanda
Return to Play 6 Steps • Step 1 • Low impact non-strenuous, light aerobic activity (walking or biking 10 – 20 min) • Step 2 • High impact, higher exertion, moderate aerobic activity. No resistance training. (20 min cario – bike, run/sprints, Jumping – F/B, L/R, skipping, shuttle run, T drill, etc.) • Step 3 • Sport Specific non-contact activity. Low resistance w/spotter (10 min bike warm-up, 3 sets of 15 reps low weight, 1 or 2 sport specific non-contact drills)
Return to Play 6 Steps (cont.) • Step 4 • Sport specific activity, non-contact drills. Higher resistance training (10 min bike warm-up, weight training 3 sets of 10 reps, heavier weights, 30 min. of non-contact sport specific drills) • Step 5 • Full contact training drills & intense aerobic activity (normal practice supervised by Amanda) • Step 6 • Return to full activities with clearance from School Medical Director
Return to Play 6 Steps (cont.) • To progress through the 6 steps, athletes must remain symptom free* for 24 hours between each step. • If symptoms re-occur between steps, athlete will wait until symptom free for 24 hours, then go back to the previous steps • Athletes MUST have a note from the MD to be able to begin the 6 steps & MUST be cleared by the School Medical Director to return to full play/games! • Children take longer to recover from concussions because their brains are still developing – use extra caution with youth athletes!
