Tectonics Plate Cerro Negro is on the Caribbean Plate. Its surrounding plates collided together to form the volcano.
Other Information Cerro Negro is still an active volcano. It is a cinder cone. Cerro Negro is the most recent basaltic cinder cone to form in the western hemisphere. The most recent eruption was in May-August 1995. The 1968 eruption is shown in the above U.S. Geological Survey photograph. The cinder cone was 750 feet (230 m) tall at that time. Note that the cone rests on older lava flows. Most eruptions at Cerro Negro produce both pyroclastic material and lava flows.
Type of Eruption Cerro Negro has explosive eruptions. The eruptions produce pyroclastic material and lava. The ash is dense black and gray. After most eruptions, an earthquake follows.

History Cerro Negro has erupted at least 20 times since 1850. Its longest eruption was in 1960 and lasted 3 months. Its most recent eruption was May-August in 1995.
Basic Facts Cerro Negro was born in 1850. It is the world’s third largest volcano and Nicaragua’s most active volcano. Cerro Negro is also know as the Black Hill volcano.
Something Interesting Cerro Negro’s eruptions commonly occur in cluster. Its basaltic lavas have water contents of up to 6%. The cone rests on older lava flows which have been enlarged during earlier eruptions.
