Definitions of Cleantech • What is "cleantech"? • The term "cleantech" refers to technologies that: • - Use energy, water and other raw materials more efficiently and productively, • - Deliver equal or superior performance, • - Improve customer profitability, through cost reduction and / or increased revenues, and • - Create less waste or toxicity • ... as compared to incumbent technologies • http://cleantechvc.blogspot.com/

  4. Companies in Cleantech • Energy • Solar, fuel cell, batteries • Remediation • Air, water, soil • Water purification • Sensor technology • Smart material sourcing

  5. Size and Scope of Cleantech • 100 or more public companies • Ranging from 100M to 25B in revenues • Hundreds of start-ups • Most with product 2 years or less way • Energy is multi trillion dollar industry • Clean water is a billion dollars a day • Environmental remediation is also big

  6. Cleantech Problems • Water purification • Environmental remediation • Clean and abundant energy • Sensors for environmental health • Materials for energy conservation • Materials for intelligent manufacturing

Water Purification • Over a billion people lack clean water • 10,000 children a day die from drinking water contaminated with disease • It is a growing problem (not decreasing) • >6 billion people on a crowded planet • Competition for water from many sources • It is what nanotechnology should solve

  8. Environmental Remediation • Fixing our messes • The US has been here for decades • MTBE, CClx, mercury, lead, asbestos • China is staring at it right now • Chemical industry and manufacturing • Many of these problems are very big • They are multibillion problems, if not more

  9. Clean Energy • Solar energy • Fuel cells • Batteries • Motors • Wind production • Hydrogen production • LED and CNT lighting

  10. Environmental Sensors • Water contamination • Air pollution • Soil contamination • Indoor building pollution • Radiation monitoring • Provide information to make decisions!

  11. Size of Industry • Billions, if not trillions • Solar energy • $250 billion just to get 25% • Hybrid vehicles to double gas mileage • $2.5 trillion • Water and soil remediation • Super fund sites run in hundreds of billions

Sustainability • This is the $64 question • What is sustainability? • Is 6 billion people sustainable? • Is 10 billion people sustainable? • What is the ‘carrying capacity’ of earth? • Any species that doubles in population more than a few times may find itself ‘out of bounds’ – and we have doubled a lot!

  13. Size of Industry • Companies – 50 to 100 just in California • People - > 1,000 and probably 10,000 • Revenue - > $1 billion • Solar alone is $900 million • Products • Over 1,000 energy and environmental • Environmental programs

  14. Summary • Cleantech is here to stay! • Names may change, but not the intent • Technology intersects environment • Need to improve our living conditions • We have very big problems to solve • And not a lot of time to do it in • Sustainability and carrying capacity
