  3. INTRODUCTION/BACKGROUND

  4. About Me – where I am from • I am from North Carolina

  5. Where I am from • I live in Charlotte. It is the largest city between Washington DC and Atlanta with 2.3 million people. • For the past 20 years I have lived in Charlotte, NC . My favorite place to visit is the mountains 2 hours away.

  6. My family

  7. My background/experiences I like to travel. I have traveled and worked in several different countries. From 1982-1986 I built a hospital In Haiti, in the Caribbean.

  8. Background continued • In 1986 I taught a leaders workshop in Kenya, East Africa.

  9. Experiences continued • In 1991 my wife and I traveled to Singapore, Malaysia, India and Hong Kong.

  10. Work experience From 1982 to 1992 my primary job was recruiting, hiring and training leaders for a non profit agency. During the 1992-1993 academic year my wife and I taught English at Southeast University in Nanjing.

  11. Work experience continued • From 1993-1996 I was the Personnel Manager for Pacific Resources, Inc. (PRI), hiring and training managers for joint ventures in China and Central Asia.

  12. Work experience continued • From 1996 to 2011 I worked with one bank that went through three mergers. I started with First Union in Operations and moved to the General Bank as a Banker – Financial Specialist in 2001. First Union bought Wachovia and then Wells Fargo purchased Wachovia in 2008 to become one of the largest banks in the world

  13. My hobbies • In my free time I like to: • Spend time with my wife and my family • Travel • Play sports like basketball, tennis, running • Outdoor activities such as, hiking and camping in the mountains • Make new friends • Listening to music

Experience with Leadership • When you either demonstrate leadership yourself, or observe leadership being demonstrated by someone else. • Demonstrating leadership is different from merely occupying a position of leadership. • In other words, leadership is something that you do, not just something you are. • To use the word used in the title of our textbook, leadership is a “behavior.”

  16. Examples from my Life • Family leader: Husband and father • Mentor to younger co-workers (“Program Manager”) • Teacher • Helper to my classmates in understanding their subjects • Leader in community and religious associations • Sports team captain

Class Expectations • Attendance • Proper attendance requires arriving on-time and being prepared for class. • Always bring your textbooks, a notepad, and pens. • Absence and lateness will reduce your grade • Participate in class • Your active participation shows respect for your teacher, your classmates & yourself • Participation will improve your grade.

Class Expectations continued • In class: • Pay attention and give your best. • No talking to classmates unless instructed. • Cell phones must be turned off. • Assignments must be completed on time. • Academic dishonesty, such as plagiarism or cheating, is not tolerated. • WHAT ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS?

  20. Course Description • The behaviors and skills necessary to be effective at doing leadership will be explored through both the leader and follower lens. Course activities will move you from leadership theories to leadership practices. Advanced conflict resolution, communication, motivation, and decision-making strategies in the individual, team, and large group context will be discussed and practiced in-depth throughout the course.
