LESSON 1 LEARN THE HOME KEYS Place fingers of left hand on A S D F. Place fingers of right hand on J K L ;. Check drawing above to be sure you are using the right fingers on the right keys. Rest your right thumb lightly on the space bar. (Your left thumb is free.) A S D F and J K L ; have a special name. They're called the home keys. Why? Because in touch keyboarding, you always start from these keys, and you always return to them. That way your fingers never lose their place--and neither do you.
PRACTICE THE HOME ROW KEYS Remember the home keys -- A S D F for the left hand and J K L ; for the right? Put your fingers on these keys. Keep your fingers curved and your hands in line with the keyboard. Don't let your wrists touch the keyboard frame. Key the following line in the text box below. If you keep your fingers in place on the home row, you won't have to look at the keys. Try it and see. Where there is a space after a letter, use your right-hand thumb to press the space bar asdfasdfjkl;jkl; asdfjkl; aassdd ff
LEARN "ENTER" TO RETURN You must now start a new line. Find the "Enter" key. Use your ; (right little finger) to reach sideways and tap Enter to return to the next line. For practice, strike Enter 3 more times. Always bring finger back to ; key. PRACTICE SPACING Practice tapping the space bar. Use your right thumb--not your left--and a quick down-and-in motion. Tap the space bar 5 times. PRACTICE HOME ROW, ENTER, AND SPACE Key the three lines below in the text box until you can key by touch -- without looking at the keys. Use your right-hand thumb to space where you see extra space between groups of letters. asdfjkl; asdfjkl; asdfjkl; aassdd ff jjkkll ;; aass dd ff jjkkll ;; aassdd ff
