Today’s Objective • Define Athletic Training and its subcomponents • Describe the roles of the certified athletic trainer • Illustrate the roles of other health care providers and the sports medicine team • Understand the requirements for becoming a competent certified athletic trainer • Describe the job opportunities available to certified athletic trainers

Definitions • Athletic Training: an allied medical profession that is dedicated to maintaining and improving the health and well being of the physically active population and preventing athletic-related injuries and illnesses • Sports Medicine: refers to the care of physically active people who have suffered athletic injury or illness • National Athletic Trainer’s Association (NATA): the governing board for athletic training, and the NATA is responsible for setting professional standards. • www.nata.org

Roles of the Athletic Trainer • Injury prevention • PPE’s, strength and conditioning programs, proper equipment and equipment fitting, taping, bandaging, and bracing, environmental concerns, and good nutrition • Recognition, evaluation and assessment • Recognition of type and severity of injury→ treatment or refer the athlete • Immediate care of athletic injuries • First aid, CPR, and AED

Roles of the Athletic Trainer cont…. • Treatment, rehabilitation, and reconditioning of athletic injuries • After the initial treatment, exercises and treatments are given to help restore normal functioning→ rehabilitation • Getting the athlete back into shape for their sport→ reconditioning • Organization and administration • Preparing work, inventories and purchasing, and scheduling • Documentation • Professional development and responsibility • CEU’s • Integrity and professionalism

Sports Medicine Team • Primary Team • Athlete • Athlete’s parent or guardian • Team physician • Medical authority, oversees sports medicine team effort • Certified athletic trainer • Communicates with team, makes initial injury assessment, provides emergency medical care, offers follow up treatment or referrals • Coach • Close contact with athlete/ parent/ guardian

Becoming an Athletic Trainer… what does it take? • Requirements • Bachelor’s degree in athletic training from an accredited program • Master’s for University Setting • Clinical experience with hands on training • BOC certification and state licensure • Forms of Credentials • Licensure • Deems who is allowed to practice athletic training and what duties that person is allowed to perform • Certification • Basic knowledge and skills to practice athletic training • Registration • With the state before practicing
