  1. Visual Analysis • Anecdotal: the story you see in the image or the history of the image depicted • Formal: the arrangement of the formal elements or the mechanics of the image (“how it works”) • Symbolic: the hidden meaning of the image or the message you are meant to get from the depiction

Plot? • Formal analysis – how does the arrangement of shapes and colors, line and light work? • Symbolic analysis – what do you make of the dog? The walking staff? Other details? • Pulling it all together – how is the whole greater than the sum of the parts?
