Tent-Making Bat – Uroderma Bilobatum Most bats make their homes in caves and holes in trees but the tent-making bat uses a large leaf (usually palm and banana-like leaves) to make itself a tent. The bat chews through a leaf until it droops making a shelter that can fit up to fifty bats inside! This tent can usually last around two months. The tent-making bat is found mainly in lowland tropical forests (and sometimes in gardens) in the south of Mexico, Bolivia, south east of Brazil and Trinidad. The tent-making bat is not currently endangered, but, since it relies mainly on vegetation (for its food and home) it will be at risk if its habitat continues to be destroyed. By Hattie
Howler monkeys are about two feet long, with a thirty inch tail. They weigh about fifteen pounds. Howler monkeys are vegetarians, eating flowers, fruits and leaves. They are herbivores, or plant eaters. Howler monkeys will give a loud call to warn others that an enemy is near. They will also use their long tails to swing through the trees to escape as you can see on the picture. They have powerful, muscular bodies. THE HOWLER MONKEY By Jack Linton

Jaguar: King of the Amazon by Ryan • The Amazon river runs from the Andes to the Amazon rainforest. The Jaguar is an apex or keystone predator and is important for the eco-system. • The Latin name for the Jaguar is Panthera Onca, which has the Greek word for leopard (Panthera) and a Spanish word (Onca). It is a stalk-and-ambush predator and kills via a powerful bite to the skull but may also employ strangulation. It is fond of water and can swim. • Jaguars weigh 56-96 kilograms (124-211 lb) and are 1.62 metres (5.3-6ft) long. It is short and stocky and is suited to climbing crawling and swimming. It is covered in dots called “rosettes” for camouflage. • It is the national symbol of Brazil. The Indians here thought it’s fat was magical. It also played an influential role in ancient South American cultures e.g. Mayas and Aztecs.

By Sabrina • Pronounced as (tay-peer), it is one of the oldest Brazilian Amazon primitive large mammal, they are actually related to horses and rhinoceroses. Its size relative to a 6-ft (2-m) man. • Also the region's largest land herbivore, the tapir is easily recognized by its unusual proboscis, which functions like an elephant trunk. They use this trunk to grab branches and clean them of leaves or to help pluck tasty fruit. As they roam and defecate they deposit the seeds they have consumed and promote future plant growth.
HABITAT AND DISTRIBUTION:- This is a flying mammal, adaptable to disturbed as well as mature rainforest and cultivated areas like plantations and gardens; where it makes a roost by chewing down the rib of a large leaf, the sides of which then fold down to conceal the animal. The species is common and widespread, found throughout tropical America west of the Andes from southeast Brazil and Bolivia to southern Mexico. FEEDING AND DIET:- Tent-making bats feed on insects, fruit and nectar; insects are usually caught on the wing, while the bat will hover or crawl to access fruit and flowers. The Pink River Dolphin By Adriana 1. The Pink River Dolphins are the most intelligent of their species, in fact their brain capacity is 40% larger than humans! 2. The reasons for the unique coloration of the pink dolphins are poorly understood, but the presence of capillaries near the surface of the skin probably accounts for much of its characteristic pink flush. Other reasons may include the age of the animal, chemical disposition of the water (especially iron content), and the temperature of the water. 3. Crustaceans, catfish and small fresh water fish. A unique characteristic of the pink river dolphin is the infused vertebrae in its neck, which allows for the 180-degree head turn, giving them a greater flexibility in floodplain forests, grassland, tributaries and shallow waters. They have a hump on their back instead of a dorsal fin.
