  3. Discussion activity • I want you but your heads down and when I ask you if this was a depressing story put your hands up and then if you thought this was a happy story I want you to put your hand up.

  4. Discussion Questions • What is the difference between being selfless and being selfish. What are examples of each? • What are the gifts what are given in the story? What are materialistic gifts and non-materialistic gifts? • How does the tree demonstrate personification throughout the story. • What are the metaphors in the story? • What are the main themes in the story? • What is the meaning or lesson learned in this story?

How do you give back to your community? “Me to We” project Grade 8’s at Mother Teresa Middle School have collected 20 buckets of crabapples, and as a inquiry project they canned over 200 jars of crabapple jelly. Students are selling the jars for $10/jar All the money will go to the Regina Transition House, a shelter for women and children escaping domestic violence.

  9. Instructions for Activity #1 • Creative Writing. • I want you to think of a time where you were giving to someone and when someone was giving to you. I want you to write me a couple paragraphs on what you did, or what they did. • Things to focus on include: • Who is the person who is giving to you? Try to think of three examples. Two of which have to be non-materialistic gifts. • Your second paragraph will tell me three things that you can do to be more giving? • What do you have to offer others? • How can I give to my family? • How can I give to my community?

  10. Instructions for Activity #2 • You are going to create your own giving tree. I want your tree to be creative. Such as shape poetry. • I want you to draw your own tree on the page. • How do you help your community, family, friends? • What are some of the gifts that you give? • I want you to come up with material gifts as well as non-material gifts. • Take some ideas that we used on the board if you are stumped.
