  3. Age Limits for Juveniles • Age 17: May be tried as an adult for any crime. • Age 16 or Younger: Juvenile court can certify you as an adult and transfer you to the adult criminal system. • Age 12: Juvenile Court can certify you as an adult for serious crimes.

  4. Juvenile or Adult?? • Was the crime against people or property? • Were the people injured? • Was the crime violent? • How serious was the offense? • Does the public need protection from the juvenile? • Is this a repetitive pattern? • How mature is the Juvenile? • How old is the Juvenile? • What are the available juvenile accommodations?

  5. Sentencing Options • Community Service • Counseling • Foster Home • Juvenile Detention Center for a short time • Juvenile Detention Center for a long time • Probation – Supervised • Probation – Unsupervised • Commitment to a mental health institution

  6. Sentencing Factors • Was the offense against people or property? • Was the offense brutal, or unintentional? • What was the state of the victim? • Was there a weapon involved? • Was the offender alone, or part of a group? • Has the offender committed past crimes? • Was the offense deliberate, or provoked? • Is the offender hostile or remorseful?
