  1. Coordinated Observations between MPO and MMO Harri Laakso ESA/ESTEC, Noordwijk

  2. Introduction • Scientific output of the mission will increase significantly by collecting coordinated observations • between MPO instruments • between MMO instruments • between MPO and MMO instruments • We can ignore here instrument suites (and those who share their DPU) as the suites will take care of their coordinated observations • Why now? - To find out • key links between instruments for operations planning & commanding cycle • requirements on the mission level (e.g., mass memory, telemetry, power etc) √ √

  3. Aspects on Coordinated Observations • Analysis of the observations by one instrument requires/needs other data from another instrument • Simultaneous data? • Does it need to be collected at the same time (within a second or minute) or • Is it enough to be collected within a few hours (i.e., slowly varying features) or (nearly) any time during the mission (I.e., permanent features) • Which variable? And instantaneous, spin-average, or what? • How frequently? • Is it enough that it is done on a campaign basis; e.g. for calibration purpose, and if so, once a week or what? • Does it have to be done regularly, i.e., the other data are essential input data? • Are the other data needed onboard or on ground?

  4. Synergies between MPO and MMO • Two-point observations • Simultaneous two-point observations are always valuable and in planetary environments quite rare • Supporting data • Analysis of the observations from one spacecraft require/need additional data, e.g., about environment & conditions given by the other spacecraft, such as • MPO needs solar wind and/or magnetospheric data from MMO • MMO needs solar and/or planetary data from MPO

  5. MPO Instruments

  6. MPO Instruments, 1 No coordinated observations necessary between MPO and MMO

  7. MPO Instruments, 2 Some synergy issues may exist between MPO and MMO

  8. MPO Instruments, 3 Strong synergy issues between MPO and MMO
