Genzer Research Group http://scf.che.ncsu.edu Random-Blocky Copolymers: Monomer Sequencing through Templated Chemical Coloring Jan Genzer, North Carolina State University, DMR 0353104 Polystyrene bromination kinetics: Solvent quality & dielectric constant The monomer sequence distribution of 4-BrS in PBrxS adjusted by varying the degree of collapse of the parent polystyrene during the bromination reaction. The content of 4-BrS in PBrxS tailored by varying the bromination time. Major findings: Major findings: Formation of PBrxS via bromination of PS by Br2 studied in different solvents (varying solvent quality and dielectric constant). The best fit to the experimental data suggest bromination kinetics following the 2nd order kinetics in bromine. Effect of solvent quality on bromination rate and efficacy explored. Broader Impact of Research: Broader Impact of Research: Understanding the effect of monomer sequencing on formation of random copolymers via bromination helps testing theories of random copolymer formation and their subsequent thermodynamics. Applications include (not limited to): adhesion promotes, compatibilizers, recognition agents, etc.

These involve popular science lectures for elementary school students (we concentrate on rural areas, such as Southwest Virginia), polymer classes for talented high school students. Polymer science lecture to High school students from Raleigh, NC (Summer 2008). http://www.engr.ncsu.edu/news/news_articles/softmatt08.html The PI has organized the inaugural student conference on soft materials “SoftMatt-2008” on NC State University’s campus in June 2008. The PI has participated in the Kenan Fellows for Curriculum and Leadership development Program at NC State University, an innovative partnership between the Kenan Institute for Engineering, Technology and Science at NC State University, Wake County Education Partnership and several universities and school systems. The PI has been selected among several faculty member candidates at NC State University to act as a faculty advisor to a high school teacher (Mr. Paul Perryman – Jordan High school in Durham, NC).
