  1. New Zealand Sailing Academy Ltd NZSA: Building good sailors, great people New Zealand Sailing Academy Ltd Optimist Development Programme www.nzsailingacademy.co.nz Head coach Laurence Fauchelle; 021 527 791; laurence@nzsailingacademy.co.nz; 09 445 4050 (A/H) About the New Zealand Sailing Academy In 2004 Laurence Fauchelle founded the New Zealand Sailing Academy (NZSA) to provide aspiring young sailors with the very best coaching methodology for the development of their sailing skills. A qualified coach and accomplished sailor himself, Laurence’s experiences first as a youth sailor and later as a coach led him to the conclusion that highly focussed coaching of small groups over an extended period of time provides the best results. “Coaching clinics are a great supplement, but they can never be as effective to overall development as a programme like NZSA can as there is simply not enough time to fully understand the students. It is very important that prospective NZSA sailors are keen to improve their sailing skills, but I’d emphasise that my coaching philosophy is improvement focussed, not win focussed. The NZSA programme has been developed to get the best out of every individual, whilst ensuring that the sailor is enjoying their sailing and hopefully starting them off on what will become a lifelong passion.” NZSA uses advanced resources and provides sailing tuition based on scientific principles and up to date sports research in order to facilitate the achievement of sailors goals. At Programme commencement an assessment is carried out to determine the sailor's strengths and needs and a personalised training programme and goals are developed with each sailor. The Programme ensures lessons are taught in the correct order to maximise absorption and that the sailor is physically and mentally ready to peak during their most important regatta. “Many parents tell me that the lift in their child’s sailing abilities while with NZSA has been mirrored by a corresponding lift in general confidence and commitment and an improvement in their school work. Hearing this has been without a doubt the most rewarding experience for me in establishing NZSA – I believe that good sailors make great people and our evidence so far is that this is certainly true.” Optimist Development Programme details The NZSA Optimist Development Programme is conducted over six months and runs all year round, with two intakes in May and November each year. Winter weekday evening training is dedicated to fitness and stamina development in the gym and summer evenings are spent on the water. All weekend training is on the water. The primary focus of the programme is to develop the technical, tactical, physical and psychological abilities of the young sailor. A variety of methods are used, including individualised instruction, regatta support and experience, performance feedback, gym time, classroom sessions and, most importantly, coaching during time spent on the water. In summer a sailor can expect to spend approximately 250 hours on the water during the six months (around 170hrs in winter). Parental support is welcomed and parents are able to view regattas from the coach boat. In winter, on the water training is based at Lake Pupuke Boating Club. In summer, training moves to Wakatere Boating Club at Narrow Neck beach in Devonport, however a wide range of venues are utilised at regattas to familiarise sailors with different sailing environments. As far as possible, the Programme is scheduled to allow full club participation by the sailor. Weekend winter training takes place on Sunday, summer training is on Saturday. NZSA strongly encourages club membership and participation. Head coach Laurence Fauchelle; 021 527 791; laurence@nzsailingacademy.co.nz; 09 445 4050 (A/H)

  2. Features of the Coaching Programme New Zealand Sailing Academy Ltd Some thoughts from our sailors’ parents “Some of the aspects of NZSA’s service that we have appreciated include the personal attention given to students; the organisation of events and transport to them; equipment and other facilities on and off the water; training rigour and intensity; the ability of the coach to make it all fun and motivating.” “We are non-sailing parents and were aware that our son had some ability. NZSA has helped considerably in focusing this teenager and setting a plan towards achieving his sailing goals. This programme has complemented his club sailing and NZSA can take a lot of credit for the results he is now achieving” “The amount of hours on the water is excellent and the individually planned programmes are well executed” “In six months of NZSA coaching our son’s sailing abilities have improved by an astounding margin. In addition, his general commitment and concentration levels have increased dramatically and we have seen an improvement in his school work and all round attitude. We believe that sailing as a sport and NZSA as his coach have been the primary drivers of this improvement.” “The coach has the gift to break down difficult tasks into simple steps, and is able to explain these to the students effectively. It was impressive to see how the coach was able to motivate our children.” • Low coach to student ratio (1:8 maximum) • Individualised training programme for each sailor • Two days after school coaching each week (ex. school holidays) • One full day coaching every weekend (ex. school holidays) • School holiday coaching five full days per week (Xmas 3wks only) • Storage and transport of the sailor’s Opti to training and regattas • Stock of spare parts and tools • UHF radios with sailors to enhance coaching communication • Advice on equipment purchases (and supply, where required) • Sailors may be delivered home after training, by arrangement. • Cost: $1000 (inc.
