  1. Things that You Can Learn about being a Good Dad from God Our Father

  2. As our Father, God never stops thinking about us and so as dads we learn that our children should not be far from our thoughts.Psalm 139:1-5 (NIV)1 O LORD, you have searched me and you know me.2 You know when I sit and when I rise; you perceive my thoughts from afar.3 You discern my going out and my lying down; you are familiar with all my ways.4 Before a word is on my tongue you know it completely, O LORD.5 You hem me in--behind and before; you have laid your hand upon me.

  3. As our Father, God does not delegate His discipline of us to someone else and so as dads we learn that it is our responsibility to discipline our children. Hebrews 12:5-11 (NIV)5 And you have forgotten that word of encouragement that addresses you as sons: "My son, do not make light of the Lord's discipline, and do not lose heart when he rebukes you,6 because the Lord disciplines those he loves, and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son."7 Endure hardship as discipline; God is treating you as sons. For what son is not disciplined by his father?8 If you are not disciplined (and everyone undergoes discipline), then you are illegitimate children and not true sons.9 Moreover, we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it. How much more should we submit to the Father of our spirits and live!10 Our fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best; but God disciplines us for our good, that we may share in his holiness.11 No discipline seems pleasant at the time, but painful. Later on, however, it produces a harvest of righteousness and peace for those who have been trained by it.

  4. As our Father, God's love is not contingent on how good we are and so as dads we learn that our love toward our children should be unconditional. Psalm 103:11-14 (NIV) 11 For as high as the heavens are above the earth, so great is his love for those who fear him; 12 as far as the east is from the west, so far has he removed our transgressions from us. 13 As a father has compassion on his children, so the LORD has compassion on those who fear him; 14 for he knows how we are formed, he remembers that we are dust.

  5. Zephaniah 3:17 (NIV) 17 The LORD your God is with you, he is mighty to save. He will take great delight in you, he will quiet you with his love, he will rejoice over you with singing." And so should each dad take delight in his children; quiet his children with his love; and rejoice over his children with singing. Happy Father's Day!
