Embedding the language Start each day with asking Wie gehts? Around the class. Create Wie gehts? Cards for pupils with printed off miniature copies of the pictures, ask Wie gehts? at the start of the day, after break, after lunch and ask pupils to choose their answer and say it to a partner or around the class. Übung– Wie gehts? Class will draw 5 circles in their jotter or have five circles cut out in front of them. They will ask the teacher the question – Wie gehts? and the teacher will respond with a feeling. The pupils should then choose a face which matches what the teacher has said to draw as a smiley onto their circle.

Wie gehts? around the world • Look at the faces in the following photos, decide on how the person is feeling and then say what this is in German. • You can also make the face of the person in the picture! Wie gehts lotto! • Copy the table into your jotters. Draw six smileys • Ask the teacher Wie gehts? • If what they say matches your smiley, you can tick it off. • Whoever gets all six ticked off first, is the winner! • If you win, you should shout out lotto!
