What is A-G? • A-G refers to the high school courses required for entrance to the University of California and the California State University systems. • There are seven general subject areas labeled “A” through “G.” • These requirements should NOTbe confused with the courses required by the state of California, like PE or individual school districts for high school graduation.
A. History and Social Science In general the classes student’s must pass are: • World Hist AB (10th) • US Hist AB (11th) or AP US Hist AB (11th) • Government/Econ (12th) or AP Government/H Econ (12th) *Need 3 years for High School graduation and 2 years for A-G requirement.
B. English and Language Arts Classes student must pass: • English 9AB (9th) • English 10AB (10th) • Am Lit/Cont Comp (11th) or AP English Lang AB (11th) • ERWC (12th) or AP English Lit AB (12th) *Need 4 years of English for High School and A-G requirement.
C. Mathematics Classes student must pass 3 years to fulfill the minimum requirement for A-G. Typical options are: • Algebra 1AB • Geometry AB • Algebra 2AB • Trig/Math Ana AB • AP Calculus AB • AP Statistics AB
D. Laboratory Science Biological Lab Sciences Physical Lab Sciences • Chemistry AB (11th) • H Physics AB (11th or 12th) • AP Chemistry • AP Physics • Biology or Honors Biology • Advanced Biology • Physiology • AP Biology * Students must complete 1 year of a Biological Lab Science and 1 year of a Physical Lab Science to complete the “D” requirement.
E. Foreign Language Classes student must pass two consecutive years of foreign language classes: Spanish 1AB and Spanish 2AB Spanish Speakers 1AB and Spanish Speakers 2AB AP Spanish Language AP Spanish Literature or any one year level two or higher
F. Visual and Performing Art Classes student must pass 1 year or consecutive semesters of the same visual/performing art. Some examples include: • Design AB • Digital Imaging AB • Drawing AB • Ceramics AB • Filmmaking AB
G. Electives • UC-approved high school courses • One year (two semesters), in addition to those required in "a-f" chosen from the following areas: visual and performing arts (non-introductory-level courses), history, social science, English, advanced mathematics, laboratory science and language other than English (a third year in the language used for the "e" requirement or two years of another language)
