Power • What is power? • Take a few minutes to come up with a definition
Power and Leadership • Power is the ability to affect the behaviour of others • Legitimate Power – is granted through the organizational hierarchy • Reward Power – is the power to give or withhold rewards • Coercive Power – is the power to force compliance by psychological, emotional or physical threats
Power and Leadership • Expert Power - is derived from information or expertise • Political Power - comes from the support of a group and networks of influence • Referent Power - is based on identification with, imitation of, loyalty to, and charm of the leader
Power and Leadership • Power should be used to influence and control others for the common good rather than seeking to exercise control for personal satisfaction
Using Power • A legitimate request, based on legitimate power • Instrumental compliance, where a subordinate performs a duty requested and receives a reward for doing so • Coercion • Rational persuasion • Personal identification • Inspirational appeal
