Different Categories of Lecturers • Total number of lecturers is around 370; most of them are expatriates. • The very few Saudi lecturers, are encouraged to pursue their higher studies, and join KFUPM as Assistant Professors after receiving their PhD. • Therefore, the real issue of promotion lies on expatriates
Categories • Lecturers in academic sector including ELC • Lecturers/Engineers in Research Institute
RI Lectures • The Research Institute has developed a special promotion system for the expatriate MS graduates hired by RI. Thus, the committee has eliminated the RI group from this study. • Appendix C of the report presents this system.
Institutional Survey on Promotion of Lecturers • British ranking system differs from the American system (e.g. the rank of Instructor in British system is considered lower than Lecturer). • American system is almost similar to KFUPM. • The result of this comparative study is provided in the report (Appendix D of the report). • This was again compared with the ranking system adopted by RI.
Promotion in some Universities • some universities utilize the services of the lecturers for non-tenure and temporary assignments. • The classifications of promotion adopted are
Proposed Ranking • Guideline similar to the one that exists for professorial ranks at KFUPM is recommended to be developed for the promotion of lecturers in the academic departments. • Ranks • Lecturer • Senior Lecturer • Instructor
Proposed Ranking • The first and last category already exists in the University. • The proposal creates a new category called ‘Senior Lecturer’. • Criteria and job description for every rank is developed.
Lecturer • Degree: MS or equivalent • Job Description: • Teaching/teaching related activities (e.g. teaching lower level courses, labs, teaching assistantship). • Committee work and administrative assignments. • Independent and collaborative research. • Attendance of relevant scientific meetings and workshops. • Involvement in the teaching and research activities of senior faculty members.
Senior Lecturer • Degree: MS or equivalent. • Service requirement: 6 years (4 teaching+ 2 in industry). • Annual Evaluation: Distinguished for 3 years before promotion. • Job Description: • Teaching/teaching related activities. • Teaching lower level courses, labs, teaching assistantship.
Senior Lecturer • Job Description: • Teaching lower level courses, labs, teaching assistantship. • Committee work and administrative assignments • Independent and collaborative research • attendance of relevant scientific meetings and workshops. • involvement in the teaching and research activities of senior faculty members • Supervision of students’ research, design, and/or coop projects and reports. • Contribution to lab development activities • Produce journal and conference publications.
Instructor • Degree: MS or equivalent. • Service requirement: 12 years of teaching or 4 years of teaching with 12 years of industrial experience. • Annual Evaluation: Distinguished/ Outstanding for 3 consecutive years. • Research: Minimum of 2 point of which a maximum of 0.5 point is taken from a conference application.
Instructor • Research (Con’t) • In the area of design, the earned point requirement can be relaxed, in which case a minimum of four comprehensive design projects approved by the department is required. • Job Description: • Teaching and teaching related activities. • Teaching courses, conducting laboratory sessions

Conclusion / Recommendation • The committee unanimously recommends that KFUPM should have provisions for Lecturers’ promotions. • The committee proposes the ranking system for the lecturers based on: • Their qualifications • Duration of employment • Work performance • Job descriptions as proposed in this report
