What is Engineering? Question #1 Who is affected by engineering?
Engineering is a profession like medicine, law, etc. that aspires to high standards of conduct and recognizes its responsibility to the general public. • The Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology (ABET) defines engineering: “the profession in which a knowledge of the mathematical and natural sciences gained by study, experience, and practice is applied with judgment to develop ways to utilize, economically, the materials and forces of nature for the benefit of mankind.”
Everyone is affected by engineering • 1. The Producers • 2. Suppliers of raw materials • 3. People who buy the product • 4. The Government • 5. Society in General
What is Design? Question #2 Define engineering design, mechanical engineering design, and electrical engineering design? What is a “Good Design”? Identify different type of design works?
Definition of design : Design is the formulation of an enquiry or a plan or a scheme in order to arrive at the reuired end-product
ABET Definition of Design Engineering design is the process of devising a system, component, or process to meet desired needs. It is a decision-making process (often iterative), in which the basic science and mathematics and engineering sciences are applied to convert resources optimally to meet a stated objective. Among the fundamental elements of the design process are the establishment of objectives and criteria, synthesis, analysis, construction, testing and evaluation. The engineering design component of a curriculum must include most of the following features: development of student creativity, use of open-ended problems, development and use of modern design theory and methodology, formulation of design problem statements and specification, consideration of alternative solutions, feasibility considerations, production processes, concurrent engineering design, and detailed system description. Further it is essential to include a variety of realistic constraints, such as economic factors, safety, reliability, aesthetics, ethics and social impact." Elsewhere in the ABET criteria for accreditation, they stress the use of teams in solving problems and performing designs.
Mechanical Engineering Design: The activity that applies the principles of physics and material science for design of mechanical system. Electrical Engineering Design: The design that generally deals with electricity, electronics and electromagnetism.
Good design is Solution to a problem, obtained at an economic cost and comprising the minimum number of parts
There are three different type of design works : • Adaptation of existing designs which required minor modification, often in dimension of the product • Developments design, which use existing design as a basis • Creative design, design a new product that has no precedent
Question #3 a. What is the different between analysis design, and reproduction?
Analysis is the examination for evaluation of the relevant information to select the course of action from among various alternative • Design is process that involves application of technology for the transformation of the resources to create a product that will satisfy a need in society • Reproduction is something made by reproducing: copy, close imitation, duplication, etc.
Question #3 b. • Determine whether the following tasks involve analysis, design, or reproduction: • Find a way to mount a cellular telephone inside a car to permit hands-free operation • Find a way to stack cans of beans so that the smallest sized box can be used for shipping
Answer : • Find a way to mount a cellular telephone inside a car to permit hands-free operation (Design) • Find a way to stack cans of beans so that the smallest sized box can be used for shipping (Analysis)
Question #4 • Carry out a featuring exercise to visualize • The selling features of a car in the year 2020. • Smart classroom in the year 2020.
