Validity & Reliability of measurement tool- As researcher we need to develop or select measurement tool for the purpose of our research. The tool should be valid, reliable and practicable. Validity- Extent to which a test measures what we actually want to measure Reliability- The accuracy and precision of a measurement procedure

METHODS FOR VALIDITY ESTIMATES • Content Validity • Criterion validity • Construct Validity
Validity types- Content validity- Degree to which the content of the items adequately represents the universe of all relevant items under study. Whether samples are true representatives of population/universe?
Validity types- Criterion validity- Extent to which each criteria can be correctly measured. E.g. family income Construct validity- Construct validity refers to whether a scale or test measures the construct adequately. e.g. Doctor measuring effect of painkiller, Try to assess the level of pain each day by asking question to his patients to rate pain on 1-10 scale. Whether he is measuring pain or numbness?
METHODS FOR RELIABILITY ESTIMATES Test – retest : • Implement the measuring instrument at two separate times for each subject • Compute the correlation between the two separate measurements • Assume that there is no change in the underlying conditions between the two separate measurements.
METHODS FOR RELIABILITY ESTIMATES Internal consistency : Two sets of questions aimed at measuring the same concept are administered to the same respondent and correlation is found out.
