To what extent has convergence transformed film? May Simpson
One way that film has been transformed by convergence is through the use of new products that relate to the film. For example, after a film has been released other companies may begin to create different things, like toys or clothing for this film. An example of this may be a Disney film such as ‘Toy Story’, as different companies will have come together to create different items for this film. As it’s target audience is children, things such as console games, toys and lunchboxes will have been created, which gives the film a bigger audience and therefore makes more money through not only the film, but the products connected to it and also gives more recognition to the different companies that are involved in the creation of new products for this film.
New Media Technologies also play a part in the transformation that convergence has had on film. Things such as I-Phone Apps or X-box games will be created which link to the film. New Media Technology such as the internet or Facebook will also advertise that film and as people use these technologies so frequently, this will help to broaden the audience of the film, bringing in more money, as people will be more aware of it. Once the film has been brought out on DVD, the New Media Technologies continue to have an effect on the film as it can now be brought out in HD or on Blu-Ray Disc. It can also be downloaded through I-tunes on the internet, using a laptop, which are all types of new media technology.
