American Dental Association Board Resolution B-164-2000 B-164. Resolved, that the ADA adopt the Digital Imaging and Communication Standard (DICOM) as its standard for communication of digital dental images; and be it furtherResolved, that the appropriate agencies of the ADA develop and communicate a definition of compliance with the DICOM and other relevant standards that can be used by the members to ensure vendor's compliance and be it furtherResolved, that the appropriate agencies of the ADA develop a mechanism for recognizing vendors in compliance with the ADA definition of the DICOM and other appropriate standards.
Vendor Agreements (1) DICOM image file format will be the standard for exchange of grayscale dental radiographic images. (2) Removable media (e.g. CD-R) will be supported to exchange images. (4) Networking for export and retrieval will be supported. (3) A standard extension (.dcm) will be applied to DICOM image files. (4) Dental digital x-ray systems shall, irrespective of vendor be able to read 8, 12 (allocated or filled) and 16 bit DICOM image files. (5) Dx, Io, Secondary Capture, Video (photography, microscopy, endoscopy) to be supported. (6) The DICOMDIR will be supported. (7) Lossless compression (JPEG) will be permitted; lossy compression will not be permitted. (8) DICOM print support optional.
