Distance Education is Not New • 1890’s- The University of Wisconsin offers Agricultural classes via mail • 1950’s- Universities in England offer courses via television • 1990’s- Colleges start offering classes via the web
Pros of Distance Education • Levels the playing field- offering classes not all schools can provide • Better, more rounded curriculum for homeschooled students • Helps out rural districts by providing high quality teachers and a wide variety of classes • Great for visual learners
Pros of Distance Education Cont. • Self-Directed- set your own pace and schedule • No Travel Expenses for school districts and no school building upkeep
Cons of Distance Education • Not good for verbal learners or those that struggle with writing • Expensive to start-up- $5,000 to $60,000 • Curriculum is not “standard” • Programs are not standardized- basic courses (downloads) to fully interactive virtual classrooms (ECOT)
