IBEX 2011 • Boat Fuel Systems: • Complying with the New Regulations and Standards • Common Pitfalls of Integrating the Evaporate Emission Components • Planning • Packaging • Accessibility Mark Trowbridge
1. Planning “If it weren’t for the last minute,…. nothing would get done.” “Failure to plan is… a plan for failure.”
1. Planning • It’s OK to Implement at the last minute • But • Plan and DesignNow
1. Planning • Bottom Line for Planning • There’s more involved than buying parts and adding them to your boat. • Prioritize your boats and fuel tanks based on importance to business. • Contact a couple suppliers ASAP. • Sketch an optimized and an alternative system for each boat / tank system. • Consider changes to the boat for an optimized system.
2. Packaging It’s more involved than getting 10 Pounds in a 5 Pound Bag
2. Packaging • There Is Added Content for • 2 New & Improved Functions • Fuel Fill - this happens at the pump • Diurnal Emissions Control – this happens when not at the pump
2. Packaging All fuel systems require some level of added content • Gas Caps, most will need changed • Deck Fills may need vents added, or other changes • Fuel Fill Hose may have added content • Labeling may need to be added near the gas cap • All boats add either an: • Evap Carbon Canister, or • Pressure Release Mechanism • Fuel Tank Venting, Valves or Signal Devices will be need • Surge Protectors, and Fuel Separators may be required • P-Trap or Improved Water Protection at Vent
2. Packaging • Bottom Line for Packaging • You’ll need space. • Obtain models from your potential suppliers. • Package protect for these components.
3. Accessibility For some boats this is the most difficult requirement to meet without significant compromise. • Accessibility Requirement Can Drive • Reduced Fuel Capacity • Tool and Boat Mold Changes • Appearance Changes in Decks and Gunnels • Additional content and complexity
3. Accessibility • Bottom Line for Accessibility • The optimum location for tank mounted valves may not be where you have access. • Boats with full, removable tank covers might be the best long term approach. • New fuel and vent components will need access provided.
