Celebrating 15 Years of Project MUSE • Originated from a grant-funded joint effort of the library and university press at JHU to deliver the JHUP journals in an electronic format • First collection of 40 JHUP journals offered on the web in Fall 1996 • Early adopters included academic library consortia such as VIVA, OhioLINK, the Oberlin Group, California Digital Library • Expanded in 2000 to incorporate journal content from other not-for-profit scholarly presses, with initial group including 11 major university presses http://muse.jhu.edu
Project MUSE Today • Well over 100 not-for-profit scholarly publishers contribute content from more than 500 journals to MUSE collections • Over 2500 subscribers in more than 60 countries • MUSE has provided libraries over $100m in savings over individual subscriptions, and returned over $70m in royalties to participating publishers • Median per-article download under $3.00 • Average of just over $30/journal title http://muse.jhu.edu
Why Book Collections on Project MUSE? • Project MUSE has a successful 15-year track record serving libraries, publishers, and users • The JHU Press has strong publisher relationships via both MUSE and Hopkins Fulfillment Services • End users want an integrated experience; MUSE is already a “go to” source for many • Library customers have been asking for some time that MUSE content expand to books http://muse.jhu.edu
Project MUSE + UPeC = UPCC Book Collections on Project MUSE University Press eBook Consortium • Led by directors at NYU, Temple, Penn, Rutgers, Nebraska • Multi-year Mellon-funded study on feasibility of collaborative UP e-book platform • LOIs from 60+ North American UP’s expressing interest in participating • November 2010: RFP for an implementation partner to bring their vision to fruition Project MUSE Editions • Research and planning began in 2008 • Initial meeting of interested presses in February 2009 • Program announced in fall 2010; core premise to fully integrate book content with journal content on MUSE platform • Early spring 2011: 28 publishers contracted, with planned launch July 1 2010 • January 2011: MUSE among small group of finalists for UPeC RFP • March 2011: MUSE selected as UPeC partner and projects merged http://muse.jhu.edu

UPCC Book Collections on MUSE • Over 45 collections offered for purchase, with perpetual ownership/access rights • Current Collections (Titles from 2010, 2011, and publishing in 2012) • All available titles by calendar-year • Subject-based collections by calendar year • Special pricing on bundles of books from all three years • Archival Foundation Collections (Titles from prior to 2010) • Complete and subject-based collections • Archival Supplemental Collections in future years http://muse.jhu.edu
Pricing UPCC Book Collections on Project MUSE • Value proposition similar to journal collections – better per-unit pricing in collections than for single title purchases • “Index Price” derived from actual average of list prices, correlated by numerous third-party data sources • Current discounted at 20% off index, backlist at 60% off index • Tiered collection prices just as for MUSE journals • Consortium pricing available, but not collection-sharing due to already significantly-discounted rates • “Order channel neutral” pricing -- same terms for all partners • Introductory pricing offer initiative through 12/15/2011 http://muse.jhu.edu

UPCC Book Collections on MUSE: Timeline • Now: Beta site availablewith over 300 free sample ebooks from 27 publishers, new integrated search and browse interface (in parallel with current site) • October 2011: Collection details and title lists released, pricing available on request, orders may be placed for access beginning in January • January 1, 2012: New site launches, book collections live on MUSE! http://muse.jhu.edu
