DUNAWAY DOLPHINS NARRATIVE WRITING
NARRATIVE WRITING HAS • A great story has a plan…. • A clear beginning • A clear middle • A clear ending • A great story has….. • Setting • Characters (use proper names) • Problem • PLOT/EVENTS (not listing with “and then” • Solution/Resolution (problem is solved) • Interesting Ending paragraph
Before you write, do you know where you are going? Do you know your story ending?
Before you write, know three things • What will be the problem in your story? How will the problem began? • How will the story have sequence of events that are not just listed (and, and then, then), but show the reader ( not just tell the reader) the action of the story? (Use details. Make the reader hungry to read your story) • How will the story end? (not in a boring way)
WORDS ARE YOUR BEST FRIENDS • Think about • SIMILES (use “like” or “as”) • METAPHORS (use “is” or “are”) • ONOMATOPEIA (sound words) • ADJECTIVES (adjectives describe) • ADVERBS (add to verbs; -ly) “roared loudly” • VERBS (strong verbs) • INTERJECTIONS (Yes! The spaceship…..)
WORDS MAKE A BETTER STORY • READERS ARE EXCITED TO HEAR FRESH NEW WORDS OR DESCRIPTIONS. • READERS FALL ASLEEP WHEN YOUR WORDS ARE TOO EASY, AND WORDS THEY HAVE HEARD SO MANY TIMES BEFORE! • BE A WORD EXPERT! Don’t be afraid to try new words and phrases!
Move your story along with TRANSITIONS • Transitions • “transport the story along” • Writer’s Tip: • 1. Begin your sentences with a transitional • phrase • 2. Begin your sentence with an interesting transition • 3. Use transitions in the paragraph
