What is theLightfoot Institute? A non-profit research & educational organization with a compelling message of hope for the future
Mission & philosophy • People are as much a part of nature as every other living thing • Every living thing depends on energy – without it everything dies • People & the environment depend upon each other
Mission & philosophy • All sources of energy must be reliable & robust, especially our electricity grid • Energy is necessary to adapt to warming or cooling of climate • Renewable energy is important, but much too small to replace the concentrated & stored solar energy of coal & oil
Are you aware that. . .? Fossil fuels are a giant bank account of stored solar energy. . . renewable energy is like living paycheck to paycheck. . .
Basis of our message • Solid information about energy supply – past, present & future • Award winning & acclaimed DVD, Nobody’s Fuel • Publicly presented to thousands of people worldwide • It’s all science – no magic here
Are you aware that. . .? Energy efficiency is capable of increasing consumption. . .
"Mr. Lightfoot's DVD 'Nobody's Fuel' presents more up-to-date, accurate information about energy than any source I have encountered. I encourage anyone interested in our nation's economic future, and anyone concerned about global warming to obtain a copy of the DVD 'Nobody's Fuel', and consider seriously the facts it presents, and what our energy policies should be."~ Mike McCormack, Member of Congress (Retired); Chairman of the House Subcommittee on Energy Research and Production from 1973 through 1980

Dispelling Myths • Today there are 438 nuclear plants in 29 countries & 57 under construction in 14 • France gets more than 85% of its electricity from nuclear power & has the cleanest air in Europe • Many countries find nuclear a viable alternative to fossil fuels to meet electricity demand
Are you aware that. . .? One Kilogramof uranium isbaseball-size & contains the powerof 2.3 million litres of gasoline. . .
New reactor design • Most of today's nuclear reactors are thermal reactors and use only 0.7% of the uranium • The remaining 99+% contains a small amount of waste which is of concern for thousands of years • An alternative design, known as fast reactors, uses virtually all of the uranium
Fast Breeder reactors • Are 100 times more fuel efficient than thermal reactors • Radioactive materials remaining from fast reactors are of concern for less than 500 years, rather than thousands of years • Therefore, waste from fast breeder reactors is more easily managed
A use for nuclear waste • Recycled uranium from nuclear waste is excellent fuel for fast breeder reactors • Safety of thermal reactors is proven. Small differences favour fast breeder reactors • Use of both types of reactors can grow because safety is under control
Are you aware that. . .? A severe energy shortage is possible within your lifetime. . .
Our plan for abundant energy • Provides effective protection of the environment • Maintains the well-being of everyone on earth • Let’s us adapt to climate change • Supports 3 times current world energy use by 2100 to lift poor nations out of poverty
