  4. The Mason-Dixon Line Boundary between Pennsylvania and Maryland. It also divided the Middle Colonies from the Southern Colonies . South of the Mason-Dixon Line, The Southern Colonies developed a way of life different in many ways from other English Colonies

  5. Maryland • 1632- King Charles I grants Lord Baltimore George Calvert colony of Maryland. First Governor of Maryland. • Calvert- Roman Catholic • Plans to build a colony where Catholics could practice their religion freely.

  6. George Calvert dies his son takes control of the colony • Lord Baltimore • Gave colonists a role in government by creating an elected assembly. • Gave generous land grants to anyone who brought over servants, women and children. • Growing Tobacco

  7. Margaret Brent • Arrived in Maryland in 1638 with nine male servants. • Help set up two plantations of about 1,000 acres. • First Woman to Own Property in 13 Colonies • Help prevent a rebellion by selling off Lord Calvert's estate: denied access to general assembly.

Religious Tolerance • Lord Baltimore wanted Maryland to continue to grow. • We Know it was established as colony so Catholics could practice religion freely. • Man or Woman could acquire land estates as long as they bring indentured servants, women or children. • Welcomed Protestants as well as Catholics to the Colony.

  9. Baltimore fears the Protestants might try to deprive Catholics of their right to worship Freely. • Passes the Act of Toleration- law provided religious freedom for all Christians.

  10. Bacon’s Rebellion • Tidewater Aristocrats: • Wealthy plantation owners, lived in the “Tidewater region of Chesapeake bay, costal Plaines”. • Control first elected assembly “House of Burgess” • Representative government that made laws for the colony.

  11. Indentured Servants- • Worked for the Tidewater Aristocrats • Signed contracts to work without wages for a period of time/ Paid for their ocean passage to the new world. • Once freed: move inland on Native land. • Disputes over land with natives. • Natives attack European villages and towns.

Nathaniel Bacon- • Wealthy plantation owner. • Distraught over Native Attacks • Seeks out Virginia’s Governor for help • Governor refuses because of trade ties with Natives over fur. • Hard to distinguish between Friendly and Unfriendly Natives. • Nathaniel Bacon and rebels burn down parts of Jamestown • Governor hangs 23 of Bacon’s Followers.

  13. Leads to decline on reliance of Indentured Servants. • Fear that indentured servants will rebel. • What will replace indentured servants in the southern colonies? • Incorporation of African Slave Labor. • Should Nathaniel Bacon be remembered as a hero?

  14. The Carolinas • 1663 a group of eight English nobles received a grant for King Charles II • Northern part: mostly poor tobacco farmers who had drifted south from Virginia. • In 1712 became known as North Carolina.

  15. South Carolina • Eight English nobles set up a large colony farther south. • Colony became known as South Carolina is 1719. • Both North and South Carolina became profitable after the introduction of the Slave Trade • Rice and Indigo.

  16. Georgia • James Oglethrope: founder of Georgia.(1732) • Wanted a colony where DEBTORS could make a fresh new start. • Debtors: people who owed money they could not pay back. • Under English Law: Government could jail someone until they paid back their debt. • Originally only allowed small farms and slavery was forbidden.
