  4. Flag • The regional flag carries a design of five bauhinia petals, each with a star in the middle, on a red background. The red flag represents the motherland and the bauhinia represents Hong Kong. The design implies that Hong Kong is an inalienable part of China and prospers in the embrace of the motherland. The five stars on the flower symbolize the fact that all Hong Kong compatriots love their motherland, while the red and white colors embody the principle of "one country, two systems".

  9. Making Appointments • Famous for being fast-paced and efficient, time is money in Hong Kong. Punctuality is therefore considered a must in business. It is therefore very important for one to allow for sufficient travel time. • If you will be late for a meeting, it is a matter of courtesy to call up the host to inform them of your arrival time. It is also important to offer apology for your lateness.

  10. Business Dress • Modesty and cleanliness are very important. • Wear a good watch. It will be noticed. •   The color red is considered a lucky color in Hong Kong. •   When dressing for a business meeting select a red tie to impress your host. •   The color white is synonymous with death. •   It is common in China to show one's surprise or dismay by sucking air in quickly and loudly through the lips and teeth. If you have been shown this gesture, it would be advisable to modify your request. Your host is obviously displeased.

  11. Topics of Conversation • The most popular topics have to do with the general economic and business conditions. The stock market, interest rate trends, inflation and labor market conditions are common topics at business and social functions. On the other hand, one can go for a more relaxed style by making reference to some of the major events that take place around that time.

Addressing others • Use family names and appropriate titles until invited by themtouse their first names. • Address with Mr., Mrs., Miss or professional title plus family name. • two parts: family name and given name. The family name comes first • Hong Kong Chinese may stand close when talking. Do not hug, kiss or pat people on the back. • Winking at someone is considered very rude • Request your bill by making a writing motion with your hand. • To beckon someone, extend your arm, palm down, and make a scratching motion with your fingers. • Never point with your index finger. This is used only for animals. Point with your hand open.

Acceptable Behavior • Christmas and the Halloween Festivals have the same importance as traditional festivals such as the Chinese New Year and the Mid-Autumn Festival. • Hong Kong youths are very receptive to Western trends and fashions, dress, music and sporting activities. The older generation remains more traditional and excessive behavior should be avoided in public.

Gift Giving • Gift giving is a tradition in Hong Kong that communicates respect and friendship. present a small gift at the first meeting, such as high-quality cognac, brandy, candy or pens, Scotch whiskey is not special in Hong Kong. • Never go to a Chinese home without a gift. • Present and receive a gift with both hands. Do not open a gift while receiving it. • The word for the number "3" in Chinese sounds like the word for "life," and the word for the number "8" sounds like the word for "prosperity." The Chinese word for number "9" is a homonym for the word "eternity." Give gifts in these numbers, if possible. Do not give gifts in a group of four; the Chinese word for "4" sounds similar to the word for "death." • Avoid giving white or red flowers (white is a symbol of mourning, red is a symbol of blood); clocks are associated with death, but watches are suitable • Try to bring something from your hometown or state. • It is illegal to give a civil servant a gift.

  15. Negotiating • Hong Kong business people prefer no-nonsense in negotiations. • People will come to you when they have a real business need. • Business discussions should be straightforward, clear and to-the-point.

  16. Entertaining • Concerts and cinemas are apart of their cultural life. • People who enjoy sports will be happy to find the many beautiful beaches and mountain trails, gyms, tennis, badminton courts and golf courses.

  17. Dining • bad manners for a host not to keep a guest's plate full, eat as long as the plate is full. Always leave some food on your dish after you are finished. • Rice is served as a filler. Do not eat large amounts. • belching, slurping, clanging utensils and making loud noises at the dinner table acceptable, sometimes even complimentary.
