WASD SAFETY & SECURITY COMMITTEE

The WASD Safety & Security Committee is responsible for evaluating safety policies, identifying hazards, and making recommendations to enhance safety measures in the district. This committee has resulted in significant cost savings and is dedicated to maintaining a safe and secure environment for students and staff.

  1. WASD SAFETY & SECURITY COMMITTEE Presented by Donna Trueax

  2. Purpose and Mission • The Board directs that the facilities of this district shall be maintained and operated in a safe condition. (Policy # 705) • Per policy it is the Safety Committee’s responsibility to : • * Evaluate the current Safety Policy • * Establish procedure for conducting and documenting the finds of periodic inspections to identify safety and health hazards • * Make recommendations to correct hazards • * Review incident and accident reports • * Conduct follow-up evaluations on safety procedures

  3. Financial Impact to District • Maintaining this committee results in a 5% discount on the Districts’ Workers Compensation Package. The past four years has resulted in a savings of: • $43,419.00

SY 17/18 Topics Discussed • Hazards Plan • ALICE training/drills • Lockdown drills/fire drills • Transportation safety • Food service safety • Safety Equipment (AED’s/Evacuation chairs) • WASD Response to the March 14th National Student Walkout for Safety • Backpacks in school • Proactive measures to reduce the risk of school violence (i.e. metal detectors, single-point access for buildings, secure exterior doors, security cameras) • Grants for school safety • WASD safety and security committee communication process • Discussion of school safety feedback

  7. Committee Recommendations from SY 17/18 Meetings • Need additional School Police Officer(s) for district-wide coverage. Possibly assign one full-time to WAMS. • Need additional metal detectors, especially for WAMS & to maximize efficiency of access at WASHS. • Need additional cameras, especially at the elementary schools. • Need safety film on glass windows for entrances & classroom access (from the interior). • Need Additional Training for staff and substitutes. Orientation process should include training on safety. • Need door securing devices in addition to door locks. • Need additional support for mental health awareness. To include training on liability, behaviors, SAP, etc. • Need additional counselors & social workers.

  8. Committees Response to Students Concerns • Received $1,000 Grant from CM Regent – Purchased fire extinguisher hooks and zip ties for every classroom door in district to be used in case of a lock down • May 29, 2018 – Staff participated in an active shooter drill • Applying for a School Safety Equipment Grant in order to purchase 3 additional Metal Detectors and 15 Cameras for Elementary Schools

  9. Considerations for the Board • Continued support for the committee • Respond to the students’ concerns • Allocate funds for training specific to Safety/Security • Allocate funds for expanding Safety/Security program

  11. Not just a local problem • The May 31, 2018 Washington Times reported that Texas Governor Greg Abbott Unveiled a Safety plan with an eye toward security and mental health.

  12. Conclusion • Our commitment is to strive to have our students and staff in the district feel safe and secure. • Thank You
