Section II Solar water heaters
UTILISE THE NATURE SOLAR ENERGY CAN BE USED TO HEAT THE WATER SOLAR WATER HEATERS
A solar water heater • Collects solar energy through a collector • Store water in an insulated tank • Based on the collector system, solar water heaters can be of two types • No.1 Solar water heaters based on Flat plate Collectors • Solar radiation is absorbed by flat plate collectors. • It consist of an insulated outer metallic box covered on the top with glass sheet. • Inside there are metallic absorber (selectively coated) sheets with built in channels or riser tubes to carry water. • The absorber absorbs the solar radiation and transfers the heat to the flowing water.
Evacuated Tube Collectors • Collector is made of double layer borosilicate glass tubes evacuated for providing insulation. • The outer wall of the inner tube is coated with selective absorbing material. • This helps absorption of solar radiation and transfers the heat to the water which flows through the inner tube.
Application • Solar water heaters of 100-500 litres capacity are suited for Inspection quarters • Larger systems can be used in training centre hostel etc. • Hot water at 60-70 C can be obtained .
Agencies in DGS&D RC • Skylark Thermal Energy Systems, Pune • Tata BP Solar India Ltd.,New Delhi • Solar Energisers P Ltd, Bangalore • Kotak Urja P Ltd, Bangalore • Enolar Systems, Bangalore • Bipin Engineers P Ltd, Pune • Sudharshan Saur shakti P ltd, Aurangabad
Solar water heating system practically requires NIL maintenance and life period is approximately 15 Years whereas water heaters require periodical maintenance of replacement of elements etc. and life period is approximately 7 years ,which further reduces the payback period Savings after the pay back period / year is 365 x 160 = Rs 58400/-

A case study for the officers’ Hostel @ RGM TTC,Chennai ( contd…) • Above system was commissioned during July 2004 • Savings to the BSNL achieved till date = 3 years – 8 months( pay back period) = 2 years 4 months x 2.437 lakhs (savings per year) = 5.7 lakhs

SELF MOTIVATION Let us motivate ourselves to conserve energy by which BSNL can cut down expenditure on energy front. Let us follow the words of our great poet / economist THIRUVALLUVAR, which go as follows means, “There is no problem in path of income being small, but expenditure should not be wide.”
It is possible when the mind turns towards ENERGY CONSERVATION and extend your hands to SWITCH OFF.We need Everybody’s co-operation to conserve energy which put ourselves in right path and our beloved BSNL too.Long live BSNL!!
